Classification of articles on Wikipedia A current project of mine is understanding Wikipedia classification:

1. example of a classification problem: the spagetti classification system

Category talk:Battles of Vietnam; Vietnam War(article); (Category:Vietnam War); (Category: Vietnam); (Category:Wars involving Vietnam); (Category:Battles involving Vietnam); (Category:Battles and operations of the Vietnam War); (Category: Military operations by war); (Category: Battles by war);

This seems to create confusion in trying to navigate and locate articles.

A fair effort to classify articles that is still evolving is demonstrated by The Native American articles:

Category: Indigenous peoples of the Americas

Classification of indigenous peoples of the Americas > link: List of Native American tribes

Category: History of Indigenous peoples of North America

Category:Native American history

Category:Native American tribes by state

Hello Richiar,

Thanks for the welcome back. I am not sure how long I will be able to attend, but will continue checking things out as long as I can. Thank you also for all your hard work. I am just now reading the archives and discussion pages. I see you have worked with "Wazronk" quite a bit.

It has resulted in a much more mature article overall. I'm very impressed.

Keep up the good work,

Hanely

Portal review

[edit]

Can you do a portal review for Portal:Environment? OhanaUnitedTalk page 15:43, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your review. I basically borrrowed the template from Portal:Sustainable development, which currently is a featured portal. OhanaUnitedTalk page 06:39, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings Richiar :)

[edit]

Richiar,

Thanks for writing to me about your current work on the article for The Urantia Book. Yes, Wazronk has taken issue on numerous occasions about "original research"...but this person is also a stickler for other Wikipedia rules as well, only dropping down their guard with the issue about Matthew Block's work which, IMO, is self published and crosses the line. However, I conceded to use it in the end, after all, because there is so little published material about The Urantia Book that fits within Wikipedia rules.

The majority of the article when I first came was centered around what Gardner had written. And in its own way created a slanted article (POV).

If the material you are summarizing with simpler, updated English is verifiable in the book, then you can use it! Just don't produce "new knowledge". Which, is what Block's self published articles do. :)

I hope this helps,

Hanely 15:55, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. "Original Research" defined by Wikipedia @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_research
"Original research is research that is not exclusively based on a summary, review or synthesis of earlier publications on the subject of research. The purpose of the original research is to produce new knowledge, rather than to present the existing knowledge in a new form (e.g., summarized or classified)."

Mexican-American War Task Force Idea

[edit]

Hi Richiar,

I read on the Wikiproject Military History talk page that you are interested in the Mexican-American War. Would you like to create that task force with me maybe?

Psdubow 15:51, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FWD: Yes, but I don't know anything about what that takes. Also, it is reasonable to organize a task force so that it covers an appropriate category, so in terms of efficiency and effectiveness, are there other areas we might want to include that would be connected to the Mexican-American War? Richiar 16:23, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Maybe the Texas Revolution and Manifest Destiny. Psdubow 16:58, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FWD: Right. Manifest Destiny and Texas Revolution are both good ideas. I went to the list of task forces and think it might be appropriate to have something in line with the era of development of the US, say "Pre-Civil War Task Force". That would include the Revolution, War of 1812, Mexican-American War. Then there is a developmental process, as the country evolves over time. Just a thought. Richiar 17:23, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

That is a great idea!!! A "Pre-American Civil War Task Force", it would be everything: from the French and Indian War, to The Revolution, then the War of 1812, plus internal conflicts like the Seminole War, and then the Texas Revolution, and the Mexican-American War, and the whole concept of Manifest Destiny! It's great! But my one and only concern is that is resembles the United States Military History Task Force a lot. But, on the other hand, our idea focuses on Pre-Civil War America and the United States Military History Task Force focuses on the US Army, and not a particular time period or war or conflict in general. What do you think?

Psdubow 20:40, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FWD: It looks like from what I'm seeing, there shouldn't be any conflict. The US Military classification seems to have to do with units and men etc that are involved in the various battles and conflicts. In fact, the Mexican-American war was the lead-in to the Civil War. Everyone was jockying for position, and when the Civil War came along, the main guys got their experience in the MA war. There is a problems I think with the general classification system itself, but I'm researching it and leaving some comments on the main talk page. Anyway, it should be ok to relate the participants in the MA war to the US Military History project, and sort of have a "joint operation", if you will. Richiar 22:02, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I have not responded since June 29, I've been away. Well, anyway, let's create it!!! Please respond ASAP when you are ready, because I won't create it until I know both of us are ready.

Psdubow 15:43, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FWD::Allright. I'm here. Whats involved in creating this task force? How many do we need? Richiar 18:00, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I'm very sorry, but now I'd prefer to wait a little while because I am all of a sudden very busy with another task force: The Salem Witch Trials Task Force, in case your are interested or want to join. (Joining this task force may help you prepare for later when when we make our's and you'll see what it takes to run a task force) I promise I will contact you as soon as I have time. Thanks for your patiences. Psdubow 18:13, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How do I make a diagram?

[edit]

I have an article I am working on: I think I would like to make a diagrame like the one here. I have the basic code for the image template, but how do I go about designing the actual structure of the diagram?Richiar (talk) 07:11, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The diagram on that page is actually an image. You can make your diagram using any image editor, and then upload your image to Wikipedia commons using the "upload file" link in the "toolbox" box in the lefthand column. (Make sure you fill in the appropriate copyright information: in your case, you will assert that you own the copyright and that you license it under the GFDL.) The specific example you show is a good one: it uses the SVG format. If you do not already have a preferred SVG editor, you can use Inkscape. You can downloca Inkscape for free in less than 5 minutes. You can learn to use Inkscape in less than 15 minutes. -Arch dude (talk) 01:33, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Cave diagrame

[edit]

Just saw your message on my talk page. What do you mean by a summary, exactly? I could put a bit of text under it describing how the sun, the fire, and the screen ties in I guess, but I don't see how that would make it any more of a qualification. Also, I could simply add with the text something along the lines of "simplified representation of the allegory of the cave". Let me know what you think would be best. --tj9991 (talk) 02:01, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've edited the sub-text for the image in the article. I'm not quite sure if it warrants the name of "summary" because I myself have yet to read The Republic on my own time, I've only researched secondary papers and heard lectures. I'm 90% positive that it does cover the majority of the allegory, because it shows everything of importance towards that area of the description of the cave. --tj9991 (talk) 04:55, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to not be responsive, I have had limited time for wikipedia. On the "universe reality" article, I have done that move to cosmology that we discussed. I also put up tags to signify that it is a work in progress. There's a reasonable chance that next week I'll have some more time to discuss and implement changes to the article. AfD nomination of Cosmology (The Urantia Book)

[edit]

An editor has nominated Cosmology (The Urantia Book), an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Urantia Book related articles and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. --Pixelface (talk) 20:23, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Improve the main article

[edit]

One way to begin improving the main article is to begin to use independent sources as the main direction for organizing the article. It is a good idea for the article to explain why the subject is notable, what the history of the subject is, what articles relate to the subject, and to use summary style to explain the main ideas without devolving into jargon, neologisms, or soapboxing. Hope this helps. ScienceApologist (talk) 16:55, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

But I am into Science (Natural Philosophy) which is a study of real physical entities and has a fairly neat hierarchial set of entities to work on. But when it comes to Philosophy ans mankind I think in terms of a chronological spreadsheet that should start at the beginning with when the mankind individual became selfconscious. Then we can proceed to family consciousness and tribal consciousness et cetera et cetera to the current mess it finds itself in. That may be Metaphysics but I'm not really interested. But I would like to know if a dog is self consconcious or an ant and what would happen if our new creation (the genious computer) were given self consciousness and free will.WFPMWFPM (talk) 14:03, 26 May 2008 (UTC) Also I've got this idea about programming a computer to have a personality. Say I take a computer, (a big computer) and tell it that I liked to read scientific articles by Isaac Asimov (which I very much did) but he up and died on me. So I tell the computer that I want the computer to get all the personal information available (and there's plenty of it) plus audio tapes et cetera and I want it to develop the capabability to write and speak like Isaac Asimov, since it doesn't have a personality of it's own. Then it could continue to write articles that I would enjoy reading. Actually Isaac Isomov wrote stories about article writing computers who "wanted to be a writer", and he more or less admitted it to be an obsession. And he convinced me that a computer that could write, and even possibly read could compose an article and might be getting close to developing a self conscious personality.WFPMWFPM (talk) 19:12, 26 May 2008 (UTC)And I agree with Hume on what constitutes information,WFPMWFPM (talk) 17:04, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I saw that you are a portal peer review volunteer. I have worked much for the improvement of my portal, but some concerns may remain:

  • Is the image at the top of the page useful and aesthetic, or should I remove or replace it ?
  • Problem with the selected biography: I contented myself with writing a short sentence as an introduction for each personality. Then I wrote the beginning of the biography, then put a link "more..." to the complete article. Is it approriate ?
  • Selected images are not of the same size. Is it really a problem ? It should be noted that free images for comics are very rare.
  • Is the presentation of the news correct ? I did not specified the exact date of each event, only the month, because I do not know it.
  • If you have any other recommendations about other aspects of the portal, do not hesitate ! It MUST become a featured portal ! Thanks. (Please reply here).--Pah777 (talk) 22:02, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
