Administrators' newsletter – October 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2019).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion, a new criterion for speedy category renaming was added: C2F: One eponymous article, which applies if the category contains only an eponymous article or media file, provided that the category has not otherwise been emptied shortly before the nomination. The default outcome is an upmerge to the parent categories.

Technical news

  • As previously noted, tighter password requirements for Administrators were put in place last year. Wikipedia should now alert you if your password is less than 10 characters long and thus too short.

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • The Community Tech team has been working on a system for temporarily watching pages, and welcomes feedback.

Same problem again

Hello, Spencer. The editor whose IP address you blocked recently (Special:Contributions/2409:4052:989:E058:0:0:20E3:30B1) is now active again, this time with an account (User:U + 1F4AD). The pattern of editing is quite obvious, with additional "borrowing" of some stuff from my user page. --Sundostund (talk) 15:17, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

2019 US Banknote Contest

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:07, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Block evasion by WP:LTA

Thanks for the block [1], but this looks like 184.146.207.178 (talk · contribs). Perhaps a longer block is merited. JNW (talk) 05:08, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

Seems like some IP hopping is also going on. Not sure if a block longer than 1mo would help, given that this IP has only been editing since the end of November; planning to just wait for now. I'll keep an eye on it and adjust settings if disruption resumes. Feel free to ping me as well at that point. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, SpencerT•C 16:47, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

Vandalism by blocked account

IP editor 67.71.159.98 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) is reinserting the same old versions of pages as 74.12.120.154 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) who you blocked (and is apparently a global LTA [2]). I also reported the new IP to WP:AIV. – wallyfromdilbert (talk) 05:10, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

IP is now blocked but I also semi-protected the page for 2 weeks. Hopefully this helps. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. SpencerT•C 15:30, 19 December 2019 (UTC)
I have a feeling the new IP will be back after their 31 hour block, since they have been checking their talk page on the other IP almost daily for the past month. I'll keep an eye out and let you know. Thanks for your help. – wallyfromdilbert (talk) 17:53, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

23.140.192.102

Hi. I want to let you know that I believe I made a mistake in concluding that user:23.140.192.102 is the same as User:Ukuhohstinky. I realized that phrase is a fairly common one and does not suggest any connection whatsoever. My apologies for everything. CLCStudent (talk) 22:12, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. This was continued school block abuse after previous blocks, so I have reblocked for an adjusted period of time with different rationale. SpencerT•C 22:21, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
