"promotional content and inappropriate external links" tag

[edit]

Hello Voidvector! You tagged the "University Alliance of the Silk Road" page for "promotional content and inappropriate external links," but I at a loss to identify either of these. The article has no external links, and is mostly comprised of quotes from articles. Could you either point out objectionable content on the talk page, or remove the tag? Many thanks! xjtu2015 —Preceding undated comment added 19:44, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It's verbiage sounds like advertisement / promotional material. Words like "aim", "foster", "promote", "designed", "leading" are used in a way that makes the article sound biased in favor of the topic. Most of those sentences could be easily rewritten to sound less so. For example, "The UASR aims to support training..." can be written as "Part of UASR's objective is to provide training...". The writing should put some distance between the voice of article and function of UASR. --Voidvector (talk) 04:00, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Fbos char creation.jpeg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Fbos char creation.jpeg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:00, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Chang Chenmo River moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Chang Chenmo River, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Jmertel23 (talk) 02:54, 9 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmertel23: is there no grace period for this? I just didn't have time today to get back to it. --Voidvector (talk) 03:02, 9 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Voidvector: I completely understand that you don't have time today - that is exactly why it would be best to keep it in draftspace to give yourself time to work on it. If it is unsourced in mainspace, it runs the risk that the article could be deleted. Jmertel23 (talk) 03:15, 9 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Epidemiology of typhoid fever

[edit]

It's best 2 use a template vice a html span. Category:Legend templates

 {{legend | red     | Strongly [[Endemic (epidemiology)|endemic]]}}
 {{legend | #e08040 | Endemic}}
 {{legend | silver  | Sporadic cases}}

Better yet convert to a mapbox you can outline the individual countries ;)

--GSMC(Chief Mike) Kouklis U.S.NAVY Ret. ⛮🇺🇸 / 🇵🇭🌴 11:39, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

@Mkouklis(2): feel free to edit it. I wouldn't consider myself a maintainer for that topic. I was simply reading the article on my phone, and the legend was broken. I thought about converting it to use {{color}}, but the legend is also in-use on Commons and the main typhoid fever article. --Voidvector (talk) 12:10, 18 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
fyi different fonts and different OS's/versions of Android, Windows, ios, Linux... can & will display differently. I assumed it was you that had posted on https://github.com/googlefonts/noto-emoji/issues/291
I'd already fixed this.
So never assume a span will display the same across all platforms please look for a template instead 🕃🙄🕄

The name of this road?

[edit]

Hi Voidvector, I wonder if you can transliterate this name for me? I believe it is going from Lei (or Lai) to some place called "Du Rang Shang"? -- Kautilya3 (talk) 12:38, 22 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Kautilya3: "勒-杜让尚公路"
Thanks, VV. The "floating population" probably refers to the tourists/visitors. At 3900 metres, it is as high as the Zoji La, with taller peaks surrounding it and a gushing mountain torrent (Namkha Chu) below. Add to that, this is the site where Premier Zhou taught the Indians a "lesson". So, it must be quite a popular tourist destination. I am guessing that this place at the bottom of the valley is a resort, with restaurants, shops and perhaps a few hotels/guest houses. Incidentally, the town of Le/Lai was apparently no more than a village in 1962. It is now the "Lai Xian". So, the military expenditure and the tourist traffic must have caused a boom in the local economy. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 14:05, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You can follow me at Dhola Post :-) -- Kautilya3 (talk) 14:10, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Kautilya3: You are right about tourism. :) Didn't know about it myself. Here is a CCTV advertisement/propaganda video (English subtitle) where a local Monpa guy narrates about the economic changes in recent history. It looks like they are focused on rural tourism. Here is another video (no English subtitle) but some buildings that might be able to match aerial map. --Voidvector (talk) 18:07, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Vow, awesome! It is a model town. I guess they are trying to show the Indians how to run a country! -- Kautilya3 (talk) 19:12, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Well, looking at the Indian side of the border today, I was pleasantly surprised. There are roads practically everywhere, in the valleys and the mountains, villages every few miles, with neatly built houses and roads.

The road on the left leads to the Namka Chu valley, where the 1962 war was fought. The road ahead, beyond the Taktsang Gompa, leads to the Sumdorong Chu valley, where there was a standoff in the 1980s. The road coming towards us takes you to Tawang and the Bum La Pass. Google says the pass is "temporarily closed", probably due to the ongoing standoff. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 00:08, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

That's awesome. It is nice to see countries invest in their infrastructure. Although in this case probably prioritized due to geopolitics rather than civilian needs, but either way a road is a road. --Voidvector (talk) 07:04, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Moldo?

[edit]

Hi Voidvector, there was an India-China meeting yesterday at a place called Moldo, which was said to be "opposite Chushul". Could it be this: 门冬 ("Men Dong" according to Google translate)? There have been joint exercises between Chushul and Moldo in the past [2]. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 13:44, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I took this article as a confirmation of my guess:
I notice that "Mandong" is already listed as a Chinese name of Spanggur Tso. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 19:33, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Kautilya3 I am not familiar with that region, far south of what I researched during the winter. Sorry, I got a new job, won't be able to contribute for awhile, even though there are some interesting news out of this region recently. Keep up the good work!!! --Voidvector (talk) 23:43, 28 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations, Voidvector. A new job under the current circumstances is a great accomplishment. All the best! -- Kautilya3 (talk) 11:36, 4 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mintaka Pass article

[edit]

Hi there - on one of the other sides of Wikipedia language divide ;-) - I've been working on the Polish-language article on the Mintaka Pass and trying to trace down the meaning of its name. You seem to have referred to a Kyrgyz ethymology, but your source is rather elusive to the best of my research, ie I can't find the book in any libraries near me (I live in southern Germany). Would it be much of trouble to let me have a look at, for example, a scan of the page the Kyrgyz ethymology is given? I would hate to make you go out of your way about it but I'd hugely appreciate your assistance if you could. Best regards. --DaLoetz (talk) 11:03, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@DaLoetz: Here are two other English source: Mintaka--"the pass of a thousand ibex", Mintaka means the "Pass of a Thousand Ibex".
The English sources did not identify language. I was able to find the language in Chinese sources. I copied the quote from Chinese source I used into the citation: Mintaka_Pass#cite_note-dfdaily-5 (Google translate).
Additionally, it can be read in modern Kyrgyz (See this Google translate, dictionary: миң теке). Also it is easily readable in a few other Central Asian Turkic languages (e.g. Kazakh - wiktionary: мең тәкә) --Voidvector (talk) 11:59, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

→→→ Huge thanks to you, VV! --DaLoetz (talk) 08:25, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Star Control edits

[edit]

Hello sir! I noticed you have made a number of improvements and changes to Star Control related material! I highly recommend you review https://www.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.cand.320268/gov.uscourts.cand.320268.1.0.pdf which outlines the actual lawsuit for the game as the parties never disagreed regarding ownership of the SC2 lore and stories. The lawsuit was whether Reiche and Ford could use the Star Control name to promote their new game and later grew to whether Stardock could use the alien *names* from Star Control 1 and 2. --EggsHam (talk) 01:16, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@EggsHam:, thanks, but neither Wikipedia or I are no party to that lawsuit, so I am not obliged to read it unless it becomes a citable source.
I do want to tell you (or anyone else reading this) that Wikipedia is not any company's marketing channel. So we have no obligation to censor any information as long as it can be cited.
Also I see that you reverted my edit at Template:Stardock, claiming it is NPOV. I can tell you it is actually norm to list lawsuits in company templates (e.g. Template:Microsoft, Template:Apple Inc.). However, I am not going to spend the time on reverting your revert, since I have other things to do. --Voidvector (talk) 05:51, 15 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I didn't mean you should read it for that purpose. I just thought you might find it interesting. I had seen that you had run into some of the same problems I've run into with the same people.--EggsHam (talk) 00:28, 16 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Here's a YouTube video of someone's time-lapse driving passing the lake (link timestamped). Beyond that I don't think it is a lake of any significance. Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:03, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
