New Page Review needs your help

[edit]

Hi Wikirictor,

As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).

Since July there has been a very serious backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.

Although New Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.

It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right at WP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page at WP:NPR and the new tutorial.

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

[edit]

Hello, Wikirictor. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Questions about your review of my submission Draft:IT4IT_Reference_Architecture

[edit]

Wikirictor,

I would like to thank you for taking the time to review my first submission to Wikipedia. As I am new here, I do appreciate any advice or guidance you can provide.

In your review of my page Draft:IT4IT_Reference_Architecture, you mentioned that I had problems with 2 of my references. I believe I understand what was wrong with the first error - and I have taken steps to try and correct it. I am, however, not sure what was wrong about my reference #5. I believe that should be a valid source to directly support factual content in the Wikipedia entry that I wrote. I also believe that I have properly cited the source and linked the reference.

Could you please give me some more detail about what was wrong with this reference? I would like to correct any problems with my submission as quickly as possible.

Thank you.

David Dec 11, 2016 Dmorlitz (talk) 01:27, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I had used this WP tool [1] to check the links.

I just checked it again - it is ok now. However, make a lead section for the article - 2 to 3 sentences that sum it up and see if you can get more sources. There is a problem with your image. I followed the link and could not find it. You should upload images to Wikimedia commons - there is a link on your main menu to the left "Upload file". If you need more help, just tell me. All the best. Wikirictor (talk) 05:45, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

i just noticed your reference 4 is a link to a WP disambiguation page, which is to be avoided and you should simply use the internal WP link tags IT portfolio management for internal (WP to WP) links. Wikirictor (talk) 05:58, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Okladnikov Cave

[edit]

LOL, that's crazy! I'll try to move some of that stuff into the article. Sorry about that! Fraenir (talk) 19:48, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, go ahead. The infobox is probably helpful, Cheers!Wikirictor (talk) 19:49, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have a better source for this? I've left it out for now: "Erik Trinkaus questions whether the Okladnikov bones are those of Neanderthals. He suggests that other species of hominids could have had the same mitochondrial DNA sequence as Neanderthals. The mitochondrial sequence found can be used to definitively identify individuals as Neanderthals only after scientists study the mitochondrial DNA of other archaic hominids too, he says"Neanderthals in Okladnikov cave Siberia". mathildasanthropologyblog. Retrieved December 24, 2016."
BTW, this should no longer be a concern. The statement was made in 2007. Since then, we've gained mtDNA evidence from Denisova 3, Denisova 4, and the Sima de los Huesos Neanderthal (with mtDNA clustering closer to Denisovans than Neanderthals), and the mtDNA sequence from Okladnikov was further refined in 2014. Here's the latest mtDNA join-tree from 2016[2] (DC1227 and Altai are both Neanderthals from Denisova Cave) [3] Fraenir (talk) 23:31, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've also left this part out since it's too close to the original text, but feel free to add that back in after rewording. This information is copied verbatim from Turner(2013), so you can just use (sfn|Turner|2013) when you add that back in. "Situated around 50 km (31 mi) north of the Denisova Cave The two-branched, tube-shaped cave is a complex of interconnected cavities, hanging rocks an entrance stone bench that is 8 m (26 ft) wide, 2 m (6.6 ft) high, and 4.2 m (13.78 ft) deep with five galleries. The narrow cave extends into the hill for about 35 m (115 ft). Its entrance faces south at 14 m (46 ft) above the river. One hundred meters away and slightly higher on the hill is an animal cave (Sibiryachikha VI) in which an as yet unclassified child’s humerus was found in 1985. Researchers suggested that this cave would have served better for human use than the actual Okladnikov Cave, but did not find evidence of human occupation."Neanderthals in central Asia and Siberia". Nature. Retrieved December 24, 2016." Fraenir (talk) 21:05, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I've finished merging most of the info. Feel free to directly make changes to the article.Fraenir (talk) 21:27, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! I put the section "Site" in. I think a sentence or two copied per article is ok. I mean it is a site description - not a Shakespeare poem. There is a tool BTW: Copyright Vio detector. However, nice co-operation. Looking forward to future shared edits. Wikirictor (talk) 02:40, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

OK - how can i be of service? Wikirictor (talk) 09:44, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Aside from us working out some way for the both of us to be on call at any given moment provided we're not otherwise occupied (like steam, skype, or discord). I suppose you could look over drafts of a page to make sure the translation's alright. --Vami_IV✠ 11:03, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Part one of your proposal sounds a bit too "binding". However, let's start with the drafts and just link them in asap. ATB Wikirictor (talk) 15:12, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

you really sure?

[edit]

The history of Southeast Asia has always been pertained by 1st: its division into the continental part and the distinct island topography, suitable for decentralized entities and 2nd: its geo-strategic position at the crossroads of the Indian and the Chinese maritime trade routes, the basis for a vibrant economy and a channel for constant influx of ideas, which the various principalities for many centuries had so masterfully selected and individually adapted for the service of resilient and highly organized societies

I am sorry, but as a native english speaker I am concerned that those with a lot less english proficiency might get lost in the first ten words. Are you really sure that is in encyclopedia standard language ? JarrahTree 02:30, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Thanks for your intervention. I have a tendency to get lost in such absurdities. Maybe youcan help a bit ATBWikirictor (talk) 02:40, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
My apologies, and thank you for your good faith response. I see you do very good work - so I havent intervened just yet, as South east asia is in my peripheral vision at the moment.. I will get back to it (the edit) later - but just as a hint my understanding of MOS is that 1st and 2nd are discouraged style wise - and also the real life competing understandings of southeast asian region and development are not making it any easier on wp articles about the region, so I may not actually get to your edit straight off - thanks again for your reply, cheers JarrahTree 02:48, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I even have issues with your more recent adaptation, so I will get back to it later to have another look - JarrahTree 02:52, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks though - i am always grateful for co-operation. You came at the right moment - when i needed to finish playing around. BTW, I neutralized the lead section a lot now. Anyway, could i now and then ask for your approval of my edits?ATBWikirictor (talk) 02:58, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Beware - I might then ask for a favour with some text issues with historical photographs of a part of Germany that I am thinking of uploading to commons.... The ecology of co-operation always has some unexpected twists and turns :) JarrahTree
No probs - just send or link the stuff to me. I'll take care of it right away. ATBWikirictor (talk) 04:07, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
its division into the continental part and the distinct topography of widely dispersed islands, which is more suitable for decentralized entities totally disagree - the colloquial english used by american and australian authors and academics for the last 70 years is peninsular and insular Southeast Asia - specially when thinking of the malay/indonesian context ... but havent put any real thought into it yet :) - probably not for a while yet... JarrahTree 09:23, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I know that - the proper terms are Maritime Southeast Asia and Mainland Southeast Asia. My latent desire for variability is inappropriate for WP. Thanks a lot for your patience. ATBWikirictor (talk) 12:16, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Brillenhöhle

[edit]

Hi, nice work on the new article! I made a few changes and added some info on archaeogenetics. I also have a minor suggestion: I think the page should be moved to Brillenhöhle; it appears to be the most common form when referring to the cave in English, and Brillenhöhle Cave is redundant. Fraenir (talk) 06:37, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks mate for your help - you are the best!!! The name thing: I thought it is helpful with the "cave" added to it, so people have an idea what it actually is. The word Höhle means cave in German, but i don't expect anyone non German to know and/or recognize that. However, you are definitely right, Brillenhöhle Cave is not the most common - 2,790 results. Brillenhöhle - 4,560 results and Brillenhoehle - 4,510 results. BTW what about the ö-umlaut, is it practical for general use. Which variant do you think is better - the oe style or the ö style? All the BestWikirictor (talk) 08:20, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, no problem - glad to be of help. I checked Wikipedia:WikiProject Germany/Conventions, and we should definitely be using "ö" (The Wikipedia convention is to use the full German alphabet in proper names, in line with the broader Wikipedia convention of using local Latin alphabets. The full German alphabet comprises 26 primary letters plus "ä", "ö", "ü" and "ß"). As for caves specifically, it doesn't really offer guidance. However, the informal convention on Wikipedia appears to be mostly in favor of removing "Höhle" and use Cave (i.e. Steinbrücken Cave) or in a few cases, use "Höhle" w/o adding cave (Drachenhöhle, Blauhöhle, Siebenhengste-Hohgant-Höhle). If we transfer that to Brillenhöhle, then I guess either Brillen Cave or Brillenhöhle would be the 2 acceptable forms. If you do a google book search on Brillen Cave, it does show up, but mostly in books that were written before 1990. Brillenhöhle/Brillenhohle is much more commonly found in newer literature. The subject is just highly specialized, so most usage in English will generally tend to use the original German; I don't think there will be a lot of casual users looking for the article on Brillenhöhle. As for your concerns about English users not understanding what "Höhle" is, it shouldn't be too problematic, since, like Cueva or Grotte, these words all have clear cognates in English with relatively similar meanings, so it shouldn't be that difficult to make the connection. You've also already offered a clear translation at the beginning of the article. Ultimately, there's no rush to make the change, so perhaps the best idea might just be to ask the people over at Wikipedia:WikiProject Germany/Conventions. Fraenir (talk) 11:00, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome - this is thorough information. I have moved the article to Brillenhöhle. Thanks for your help ATBWikirictor (talk) 12:59, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Goyet Caves

[edit]

I have removed some text that was copied from other people' writings in Goyet Caves. You should rewrite it completely in your own words. Describing the animals and necklaces is important, but you can't plagiarize others work. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 22:58, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I get your point. Rewriting text in my own words is what i usually do. When it comes to listing things as in this article, the choice is limited at times. An Arctic Fox is an Arctic Fox. What would you suggest? Change the word sequence? I am grateful for any advice. Usually i check my edits with Copyright vio detector. as i did with this article. However, i am aware the issue here - in case you have some tips, i'd be glad to improve. ATBWikirictor (talk) 23:27, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

some translations I made for you to look over xoxo vami

[edit]

I thought I might test the waters of your earlier agreement (also I forgot heh) and send some "drafts" of articles I attempted to translate from German and into English. I've been told that some of them are rather tricky for translation.

Hi - I am mobile at the moment, that is why only a quick check for now, more in the evening. I checked 1,2 and 3. They are OK. Except for the fact that there is more content to get and the last sentence actually goes like: king William ordered the site to be levelled in 1845, which also had been ruined by that time. ATB
Hi i am back on my desk - FORGET this mobile edit - I hate mobile touch pad keyboards - my fingers are too fat for that. OK - do you want me to make - if there are any - corrections in the articles? It is the most efficient way IMO. I am going to check the rest now and get back here when finished. ATBWikirictor (talk) 08:09, 13 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think it would be best if you made the corrections instead of posting corrections to make to reduce the time needed to find an error and fix it --Vami_IV✠ 13:25, 13 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I guess you have noticed the edits. Number 1, 2, and 3 should be ok now. The reference 2 (Stuttgarter Zeitung) in Altdischingen Castle is actually for the Dischingen Castle, which i presume you are going to edit as well. Just move it there. Zuffenhausen is a lot of work. A 1:1 copy must be tagged as such. ATBWikirictor (talk) 02:03, 14 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

re: Synoptic table

[edit]

It looks like you've spent a decent amount of time and effort on this; unfortunately, this concept is, IMO, fundamentally flawed and 'unfixable'. A synoptic table is an overly-simplistic, subjective, and outdated method of presenting this information. Detailed logarithmic timeline is a superior method of presenting similar information. Fraenir (talk) 15:19, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  1. A synoptic table needs to use as a foundation a well-sourced template formatted by an expert in comparative history and geography. Otherwise, editors are forced to make several, major subjective and editorial decisions, which does not play to the strengths of Wikipedia.
  2. The primary appeal of a synoptic table is its simplicity and visual appeal. Relative beginners with an interest in a portal/starting point for exploring history is probably the primary intended target audience. Although your changes are superior, information-wise, it perhaps is already too complicated for this intended audience (while still suffering from several major inaccuracies).
  3. The time range for this concept is arbitrary. Personally, I'd begin with anatomically modern humans and end with the formation of several primary civilizations, but this is a personal, subjective opinion.
  4. The geographic scope is arbitrary. Personally, I'd split West Asia into Mesopotamia and Persia, Central Asia into its own, add West and East Siberia, perhaps add the Himalayas, split Japan into its own, add Sahul+, etc… but again, these are personal subjective choices which rather complicates something that should, conceptually, be watered down or simple. Achieving the proper geographic division requires a delicate balancing act, which again, does not play to the strengths of Wikipedia.
  5. This concept stems from an old-school approach and does not take advantage of technological improvements – an interactive map is a better way to present this information, for one.
@User:Fraenir Thanks mate for your insight! I had this page flagged for deletion about a month ago. But it was objected. The creation of this new table is my answer to this objection. I still think it is the best to remove this page. ATBWikirictor (talk) 15:29, 19 January 2017 (UTC)Wikirictor talk • contribs 03:18, 20 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@ Stekirr (talk) Fair enough! I would rather see some editors, who really contribute something substantial, like on history etc. but this does not seem to happen. Most editors are only trying to make sneaky edits in order to promote their business. This is stuff, that does not belong into WP. However, when you say, that all continents except Africa are being represented, that means this also includes Antarctica. How do you know, there aren't restaurants run by a Moroccan or a South African? When you claim things, you have to provide sources. It is better to omit things, if you cannot prove it. BTW, i also live in SHV since 2002. All the best Wikirictor 06:17, 21 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
