Sorry to edit your sandbox. I just wanted to be sure you saw the link. Then I saw you already have the link. Just wondering why you're preparing an article that already exists. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 20:06, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your interest! Well, I am not preparing it from scratch, I just plan to expand it with the help of the much better Italian equivalent (it's an FA article in it.wiki). I'd like to bring it to A class, gonna be tough but I'll try xD. Btw I'm on livehelp irc atm!
Ah. No problem at all. I you need any help at all, just ask. By the way, about the "poisoning" thing. When you add categories, and I think some templates too, they get immediately listed in another part of Wikipedia. (See the bottom of any article. Click one of the categories and see.) By modifying the category by adding some arbitrary word, you disable it, or create a category that doesn't exist. This will then not be listed anywhere. The reason I suggested poisoning it instead of adding a colon, is because you can, in the end, search and replace the keyword with nothing, thus enabling the category or template. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:33, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Pics. Here's the list of the pictures I took so far: Lighter - Chair - Crucifix - Pot - Kitchen Appliances (the big ones to cook) - Fork - Coffee Cup. Drop me a line with ones you'd like me to take!

A kitten for you!

[edit]

Please come back to IRC. Don't be offended. He didn't mean it. We love you and miss you.

Anna Frodesiak (talk) 16:43, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

) A kitten is always the best thing to do, in any situation! Copyvio, lack of sources, not notable? Paste a kitten and those thingies will go away ^^

By the way, did you know that the image name is in Italian? Zidanie5 (talk) 18:07, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - Writing a new Wikipedia Article

[edit]

Hi Zidanie5. Thanks for your interest and sorry I did not want to post there. I'm writing an article about a family member who is an accomplished and known artist with a long career. I'm pretty sure I have the right start as far as learning the process and creating the article in the sandbox, and then seeking help to check it out before publishing. The ariticle is 99% together and sourced, etc... but simply in MS Word. I'll need to redo the whole thing within Wikipedia. I know there are rules about editing your 'own' wikipedia page, but I don't know if there are rules about being related to the subject? So I guess that is my first question; can I write an article about a family member? ! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Thegallery/Francis_Kelly_(Artist) Thegallery (talk) 16:45, 17 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and you're welcome.
There are indeed "guidelines" regarding the kind of article you're talking about. I'll sum it up for you: you can make the article, the page, but Wikipedia as a community strongly discourages it, because it is difficult to keep a neutral point of view when writing about someone you're in a close relationship with. This, especially here, is the main policy page you should refer to in this case. The same "rules" you were talking about, here, those for one's own page, can be applied to "family" situations too, so giving it another read can be useful, especially section 4. Another page that can help a lot in these cases is this one. Remember that usually, if a subject is notable enough, there will be someone unrelated that will start the page at some point.
The community is usually kinder with conflict of interest editors if: 1) the article is as neutral as it could be if it was written by an unrelated editor, 2) The conflict of interest is made clear, not hidden, and 3) the editor does not seem to be only interested in that article, and gives a help in other pages too.
For 1) what you need to do is to be very careful, i.e. you need to keep a neutral point of view at all costs. This page will help you with that.
For 2) Until it's in your sandbox there is no need to do that. It will be useful, IF you decide to go on with your article, when it's time to move it to mainspace or submit it for a review, so don't worry about it for now.
For 3) You could be labeled as a Single Purpose Account, so try to make some edits before going all in with your article (and possibly, after doing so ^^). To do that, you can start helping a bit around WP:CLEANUP, or you can find a project that relates to your interests and see what help is needed (e.g. Project:Music). Or you can take some ideas here!

Anyways, the wisest thing is usually NOT to edit in a conflict of interest situation.

If you do those three things, especially the neutral point of view one, your article has much better chances of not being deleted (still possible though...). Naturally, all other policies apply too, especially this one and WP:RS, so I hope you give them a read to check if your article conforms with those policies (especially check your references). For any further explanation, you can find me quite often (not tomorrow until evening, though) on the IRC channel wikipedia-en-help... It can be more comfortable for explaining things like formatting and to go into detail.
So, bottom line, don't do it, if you do it, do it right, read the help pages above (I know they're many but they're useful), and even then it may be deleted.

Yes, wow, so much to think about! First of all, thank you so much for the thorough introduction and all the links. They are my reading assignment for today! There are a lot of gray areas. Actually my brother pretty much asssembled the bulk of the document, so I have't contributed much myself. Francis Kelly is my father, and though I've spent a lifetime with him, I don't have much to do with his biography. The document itself is built on from various published biographies over the years, as well as many articles and other publications that we have physical copies of. Unfortunealy many of the sources are no longer published and not available online, but they are legitmate sources that can be looked up by others. The article is objective, as there are no opinions to be shared. It's mainly just his biography. That being said, there is talk of his 'influences' and a couple of things that could be seen as subjective, and that is where we'd need outside help, to make sure we are not drawing conclusions or making assumptions. Of course, one of the sources is in fact my father and my mother, who traveled with him through his formal education and career. That is a definate conflict of interest, but there's also no better source!
He is notable and been well received and 'known'. But he is not famous and frankly I don't see any one else creating much more than a paragraph about him. Because we have his collection and documents including every article and show involving him there's no better source. And even if it is not all included on the published page, much of this info should still be in the disscussion or otherwise included with the article. Unfortunatley no one is knocking on our door to write the article. I assume one will appear eventually, but my guess it that will be built from various sources on the internet, some of which are not very accurate! Anyway, I will start on my 'assignment'. And we'll go from there.
I've actually been a member of Wikipedia for many years, and I've made a couple of edits. But they have been very minor, as frankly I've been too shy to think my knowledge is above others. So I've primarily just made a few suggestions in the discussion pages rather than make the edits myself. Publishing this article would definatley be a break from my usual activity on Wikipedia. Thanks again; sorry to ramble on! Thegallery (talk) 10:14, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To Zidanie5: You left me a message asking why I said "welcome." Well as of Oct 15th you state that after helping Wikipedia many times you have decided to make an account. And your talk page says welcome as of October 7, 2011. Please excuse me if I have upset you by adding my welcome. Thanks again for your help. CatherineCathlec (talk) 16:37, 29 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I see... Well, the first date on my user page is October 2009, when I made this account, then I put another signature this October after changing some text... And you're right, nobody welcomed me for two years! Don't worry, you didn't upset me, I was only curious :-) Zidanie5 (talk) 16:44, 29 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for answering, Zidanie5. As I said before, I have found your reviews and suggestions most helpful! As the discograpy was my first full article, I am still learning ettiquette and terms on Wikipedia. Have left you a new message on the discography talk page. Hi Zid! Long time. Do you know this sandwich? We could use a photo, if it's convenient, and if you're hungry. Best, :) :) :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 05:04, 16 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Anna! Long time indeed, we never seem to cross each other on IRC, stupid timezones... Anyways, I never heard of that, it probably is a Northern dish (I could tell from the name even before the article itself confirmed me). My father works in Northern Italy, I'll have to ask him if he ever came across such a sandwich, if so I'll have him take a pic! Zidanie5 (talk) 18:03, 16 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! I haven't been on IRC much lately. Not time zones. Just me. Tell your Dad I say hi, and no worries if he can't find it. :) :) Best wishes, and see you on IRC soon, my friend. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 18:40, 16 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I understand! Well hope to see you soon on IRC, in the meantime have fun! :-) Zidanie5 (talk) 20:54, 16 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Anna, after asking around a bit, I found out Cudighi is actually a pronunciation variant of Cotechino, and that it basically constitutes a variant of cotechino, but it's a mainly American variant, brought to the States by Italian immigrants... In Italy it would simply be cotechino, while cudeghi is a particular recipe from Michigan... Probably asking someone from there is your best shot at getting a picture... Zidanie5 (talk) 23:27, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, okay. I'm kind of stupid, because I just saw Italy in the list and thought of you. Of course, the article says Michigan. Sorry to put you through the trouble. Maybe there's a project Michigan where I can ask. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 01:34, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Language page

[edit]

I added a few Serbo-Croatian translations for you. I'll come back to pretty them up; I'm editing from a U.S.-standard keyboard, so I'll have to hunt down all the unique letters I need to insert them. Also, there's the issue of Serbo-Croatian being a distinct dialect from Serbian or Croatian, and not being spoken by one country alone - I put it under the flag of Yugoslavia (a dead country) for now for lack of a better option. m.o.p 05:40, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

:-) This could snowball.  Chzz  ►  06:20, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for contributing to the page, Master, and I guess the choice of Yugoslavia may be the most "neutral" of all. I tried searching for some page with language icon flags listing Serbo-Croatian too, but found nothing! Zidanie5 (talk) 02:58, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!

[edit]

Just to say that, unless I'm much mistaken, we saw each other on the FIE Fencing Channel today. This summer I'll flesh up Arianna Errigo's and Elisa Di Francisca's articles. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 19:46, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, we did indeed! On the Youtube comments to the live stream. I made a bit of work on Errigo's page, put a table there, but there's still much work to do. I was shocked when I saw the state it was in, only Vezzali's seems a bit more complete.--Zidanie5 (talk) 19:55, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Ethnic minorities in Georgia (country), you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Evangelical Baptist Church and History of Georgia. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

September 2014

[edit]

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Joanna Newsom may have broken the syntax by modifying 2 "[]"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Invite to the African Destubathon

[edit]

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. Thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:13, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:09, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
