Makwande! Increasing Africa’s Presence on Wikipedia

[edit]

Join Boston University Libraries on Tuesday, November 13, from 1:00pm-4:00pm at 745 Commonwealth Avenue, School of Theology, Room B24 (Oxnam Room) for a Wikipedia Meetup. As part of International Week Education Week, we will be translating content into African languages and adding content related to Africa.

UPDATE Thank you to all who joined our Editathon. We were able to add content in Amharic, English, Igbo, KiSwahili (wikidata), isiXhosa, and isiZulu. There’s so much more we can accomplish. If you weren't able to attend in person, you can still participate. For the rest of the week, let’s add content about Africa in any language and let’s contribute to African language Wikipedias.

To join in, just make an edit to Wikipedia, and when you write your edit summary (the little box that pops up after you choose ‘publish’) include our hashtag #makwande. Check out our hashtag here to see what we've accomplished so far: #makwande

[edit]

  1. Go to the Makwanda Edit-a-thon page.
  2. Under Actions, click Join Program.
  3. Enter the passcode we will provide you with.

We'd also like to continue our momentum after this event. For all of International Education Week (November 12-18) we're asking everyone making an improvement to coverage of Africa to use the hashtag #makwande in their edit summaries. Makwande means "Let it be increased" or "Let there be growth" and has association with thanksgiving in isiZulu and other Nguni languages.

Possible Topics for Editing

[edit]
[edit]

This is a good project for beginning editors.
Dead external linkson Cleanup listing for WikiProject Libraries There are many topics related to libraries outside of the United States and Europe. Below are a few examples:

Add Citations

[edit]

This is a good project for beginning editors.
Wikipedia's Citation Hunt tool randomly generates Wikipedia snippets that need reliable citations.

  • Citation hunter search for Wikiproject Africa articles. This should bring up a random “citation needed”, but limited to articles that have been identified as “about Africa." If you get an error message, go to the Citation Hunt and type "Wikiproject Africa" into the search box. Also try Wikiproject Nigeria Wikiproject Algeria. There are many wikiprojects devoted to specific countries.

Add Citations: African cinema

[edit]

Heer are a few suggestion to search in the citation hunter. If these links aen't working for you, go to the citation hunter and type these terms into the search box.

Translate Single Words

[edit]

This is a good project for beginning editors with language skills.

  • Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Loves Women/Occupations Wiki Loves Women, in collaboration with the AfroCine Project, requests translations of filmmaking occupations into the following languages: French, Hausa, Swahili, Igbo, Yoruba, Arabic, Lingala, Shona, Amharic and Portuguese.
(To edit in Wikidata: go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Loves Women/Occupations. In the list of occupations, choose one by clicking on the number beginning with Q. Now, you see the page for that profession. On the upper right, change your language to the language you would like to input. Now edit the first section, adding your language.)
