Hawaii is a state of the United States. It was formerly an independent sovereign nation called the Kingdom of Hawaii. The government was overthrown and came under the authority of the Provisional Government of Hawaii. Under threat by U.S. President Grover Cleveland for the rightful restoration of the monarchy, the provisional government formed the Republic of Hawaii. U.S. President William McKinley annexed the Hawaiian Islands to become the Territory of Hawaii. U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower signed a law establishing the present-day state.
