Gilbert wrote this work in 1868 as a single-page comic piece in the magazine Fun; he expanded it into a full one-act libretto in 1873. It was first performed in 1875 with music by Arthur Sullivan, and has remained popular ever since.

Contemporary steel engraving illustrating the operetta. In the court, the defendant, with his guitar, clings to his new love. The jilted bride throws herself into the arms of the counsel while the judge gestures his displeasure and the usher tries in vain to control the ensuing disorder among the jury and spectators.
