Paragraphic illustration

Before you can draw your first diagram, you must be able to work with primatives. Linguistics (not yet comp-sci) is where you need to get. You must be able to state your problem. Once stated, you have an initial state. This initial Statement decribes in one sentance what your problem is. If you don't have a problem, you don't need a UML diagram.

NOTE: a sentance is a linguistic object; a problem is a logical argument. A well-formed statechart or state diagram can be expressed linguistically in the form of a single paragraph. Forget the fancy pictures for now.

Think: What is an expression? What is an argument? What Context are you thinking from?
