History

[edit]

This section states "It remains the only indigenous monarchy in the Pacific." That is far from correct. There are still three kingdoms in nearby French Wallis and Fatuna. These present day Kings are recognised by the French. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallis_and_Futuna (History section).

I believe there are also other Pacific monarchies. (WT-en) Tiddy 22:10, 4 November 2009 (EST)

I have lived in Tonga for 3 years….This article is a vastly distorted representation of what you would actually encounter. This article needs not only to be updated but checked for accuracy. Monarchal powers are definitely strong but parlimentary influence is on the increase. Young people are not the driving force in the pro-parliment movement. Tongans have access to education but the quality of education is deplorable.

The vast majority of Tongans live on less than US$100 per week. Violent crime and theft are pervasive and grossly under-reported. The police are ineffectual. Police response times are long even in an emergency.

The hospital is very poorly equiped and personell are minimally trained. Many of the doctors have training that is similar to an EMT.

The vast majority of Canadian, USA & European citizens would not consider a visit to Tonga to be either safe or enjoyable.

There are a handfull of very nice but pricey accommodations but service is not good. Service expectations in the South Pacific region are not on a par with Canada, USA, Caribbean or Europe. Most accommodation in Tonga would be similar to an old motel.

Quality and variety of dishes at restaurants is limited. There are several options for Sunday Lunch and Dinner. The article is painting the typical bucolic picture of Tonga. There are at least 3 chinese restaurants open for lunch and dinner. Pangaimotu island offers lunch. The scenic hotel offers brunch. There are two restaurants open on sunday as well as resorts. KKC chinese sells alcohol, cigarettes and carryout all day on sunday. —The preceding comment was added by 202.129.228.228 (talkcontribs)

"Absolute monarchy"

[edit]

I removed "is one of the last absolute monarchies in the world (although in the past years, it can be considered quasi-constitutional)", as the article says it became a constitutional monarchy in the 19th century and there is no mention of the king's powers been made absolute (or on any incident that could have caused such a change). Also Wikipedia says that Tonga is a constitutional monarchy. LPfi (talk) 06:42, 25 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
