From Middle French échoppe, from Old French eschope, escope, from Middle Dutch schoppe, scoppe, from Old Dutch *scoppa, from Proto-Germanic *skup- (“shed, stall”). Cognate with German Schupfen, Schuppen (“shed”), Dutch schop (“barn, shack”), English shop. More at shop.
