First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean ᄭᅮᆷ〮 (Yale: skwúm), from ᄭᅮ〮다〮 (Yale: skwú-tá, “to dream”) > modern 꾸다 (kkuda) + (-m, substantive suffix), intermediate form being Early Modern Korean ᄭᅮᆷ (skwum). Cognate with Jeju (kkum).
