[edit]From Hebrew אֱלֹהִים/אֱלוֹהִים (ʾélôhím, “god(s), heavenly power”), plural of אֱלוֹהַּ (ʾélôah, “god”), often taken to be an expanded form of אֵל (ʾēl, “god”) (whence El).
