Invented in 19th-century Germany from a misreading of Nerthus, name of a goddess in Germania (98 BCE) by Roman senator Tacitus. Nerthus is a Latinized form from a Proto-Germanic *Nerþuz, apparently cognate to Old Norse Njǫrðr.
