Etymology

[edit]

From New Latin, from Old Swedish Ingermanland. The name could be related to Inger, Inkere, names for the Izhora river, a tributary of the Neva, itself named after the Finnic people, the Izhorians.

Or, named after Ingegerd Olofsdotter of Sweden, a Swedish princess and Grand princess of Kiev (though this has been dismissed as folk etymology); for the name see Ingegerd.[1]

Proper noun

[edit]

Ingria

  1. A region to the south of Karelia in what is now Russia.
