Template:R:OED Online

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

dictionary, n.”, in OED Online Paid subscription required, Oxford: Oxford University Press, launched 2000.

Usage

This template can be used in the "References" section of an entry to provide a citation to OED Online, the online version of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). As this website requires a subscription, readers will not be able to access any link generated by the template unless they have a subscription and are logged into the website. Access is sometimes possible via a public library website.

As an alternative, {{R:Lexico}} can be used to provide a link to Lexico, a free online dictionary that was a collaboration between Dictionary.com and Oxford University Press (OUP).

Parameters

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1=, |entry=, or |title= – the entry (headword or lemma) in OED Online cited. If this parameter is omitted, the template uses the Wiktionary page name.
  • |2=, |pos=, or |part of speech= – the part of speech of the entry. By default, the template italicizes the value assigned to the parameter and adds a full stop (period) to the end. To turn off the default formatting for the purpose of specifying a different formatting using wikitext markup and templates, specify |noformat=1 or |noformat=yes: see the example below.
  • |3=, |id=, or |code= – to create a link to OED Online, log into the website, look up the entry, and locate the appropriate "Cite" link that refers to the part of the entry to be referenced. Thus, if referencing the entire entry click on the "Cite" link at the top of the entry; and if referencing the etymology, go to the "Etymology" tab and click on the "Cite" link at the bottom of the page. Use the number appearing at the end of the digital object identifier (DOI) URL shown. For example, if the URL is https://doi.org/10.1093/OED/5046946102, specify |id=5046946102 in the template.
  • |url= – if |3=, |id=, or |code= has been specified but the template is not linking to the correct URL, use |url= to specify the URL.
  • |subentry= – a term that appears as a subentry or sense under an entry. If |subid= is specified, |subentry= may be omitted if the subentry is identical to the name of the Wiktionary entry.
  • |subpos= – the part of speech of the subentry.
  • |subid=mandatory in some cases: the number at the end of the digital object identifier (DOI) URL that refers to the subentry. To locate this number, go to the subentry or sense and click on the "Cite" link at the bottom. For example, if the URL is https://doi.org/10.1093/OED/6196781227, then specify |subid=6196781227.
  • |suburl= – if |suburl= has been specified but the template is not linking to the correct URL, use |suburl= to specify the URL.
  • |4= or |date= – the date of the entry, which could be a month and year, or only a year. If no date is specified, the template indicates "launched 2000", the year in which OED Online became available to subscribers.
  • |archiveurl= – the URL or web address of a entry on a website such as the Internet Archive or Perma.cc at which the entry has been archived.
  • |archivedate= – the date on which the entry was archived.
  • |5=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage cited from the source.
  • |nodot= – by default, the template adds a full stop (period) at the end of the citation. To suppress this punctuation, use |nodot=1 or |nodot=yes.
