Template:am-IPA needed
[edit]I actually don't have the skills to create a template, but it would be really helpful to have geez/amharic IPA template. Abreham97 (talk) 21:53, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
- I think the difficulty would be the geminates, which are not shown in writing, so I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble if it won't generate the desired output in most scenarios anyway. Thadh (talk) 22:42, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for the response. Now I'm learning day by day how to write Ethiopic in IPA phonetics. It's satisfying and frustrating at the same time. For example the schwa is used for both the 1st order and 6th order. It's even worse when it comes to the so confusing use of the same characters in both IPA and transcription/romanization attributing them different pronunciations. Some times I feel I'm wasting my time while trying to add IPA section (it would be faster to just record on Lingualibre and attach the file audio at least until we will have a decent IPA template). Anyway if you know some entry template to smooth the entry work I'd really appreciate. Thanks. Abreham97 (talk) 22:57, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah, ə threw me off at first, too. But Amharic phonology is quite straightforward, if you don't count stress placement, I'm often not sure about those either. As for templates - I have started working on Amharic just a little while ago, so much of the infrastructure isn't done yet. For nouns, we have
{{am-noun}}
,{{am-def}}
and{{am-poss}}
(which are actually very handy), and we have a lot of see also templates (like{{am-personal pronouns}}
) but that's just about it. By the way, don't forget to add transliterations when they aren't generated automatically! Thadh (talk) 23:21, 24 November 2021 (UTC)- It never happened to me so far, I mean the non auto generated transcriptions. It has to be added manually in that scenario I suppose; manually right? Abreham97 (talk) 23:27, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- Yes. What I meant is scenarios like እንግሊዝኛ ትችላለህ, which would automatically generate ʾəngəlizña təčlaläh, but the desired output would be ʾənglizəñña təčəlalläh. You'd have to fill in the parameter
|tr=
in the headword. Thadh (talk) 23:32, 24 November 2021 (UTC)- Yeah, you're absolutely right. Of course the second one is better, but still it's not helpful at all for people who do not read in ge'ez script for instance between በ ብ or ኧ('ə) አ('a) እ('ɨ). Wouldn't be better to improve such thing at a code level. Maybe transliteration is well known by linguistics scholars. Nevertheless IMHO IPA should be as its purpose the "internatinoal" and standard alphabet. The letter ä used as ə and ə sometimes as ɨ sometimes as schwa. This is scary. Also for the natives. I thank you for your time and apologize for my rant. Abreham97 (talk) 00:11, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
- I'm afraid there's not much we can or should do, the spelling as used now is the same as is in use among scholars (like Kane and Leslau) and is also pretty much the same as that of Ge'ez and Tigrinya for instance. Transcriptions are there to help the readers read the word, not necessarily to help them pronounce it! But I do understand where you're coming from. Thadh (talk) 00:19, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
- OFF TOPIC Do you know some way to batch uploading? Or do you do all the entries manually? Abreham97 (talk) 00:34, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
- I personally do everything manually, but I know some editors do it semi-automatically. If you have questions about that, the easiest way would be to join the discord server and ask there, and otherwise I could give you some names you could approach about that subject. Thadh (talk) 00:43, 25 November 2021 (UTC)

Welcome!
[edit]Welcome
[edit]Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.
If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:
- Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
- Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
- Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
- If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
- If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
- Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (
~~~~
) which automatically produces your username and timestamp. - You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.
Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary!
Thanks for your Amharic edits by the way, we desperately need more editors there; I do see some errors here and there in your code, so I think going through WT:ELE wouldn't hurt, but overall, your contributions are great! Feel free to approach me with any questions you may have! Thadh (talk) 22:42, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- yeah I'm still learning the wiki markup. I forgot to mention the conjugation and declention tables which are most needed for languages full of inflections. But I am still trying to collect as much grammatical elements as possible to proceed with the the creation of tables. For that concern I'd appreciate some technical guidance on columns and raws formatting. Abreham97 (talk) 23:17, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- You can look through
{{am-poss}}
and for instance{{aa-conj}}
(which is from another language, but probably similar in terms of code). You can approach me again when you feel ready to start creating conjugation tables. I should actually read up on them myself... - Also, make sure to look at WT:AAM. If you have any objections/concerns, feel free to raise them, there's nothing we can't change, but you should use word separators and question marks (at least for the time being, for the sake of consistency). Thadh (talk) 23:49, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- Oh you mean at the {PAGENAME}! I didn't put question mark 'cause the Phrasebook project doesn't contemplate punctuation on pagename level. Furthermore I really don't know hot to create with separators. I need to check. Thanks. Abreham97 (talk) 00:23, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
- No, no, the questionmark shouldn't go in the pagename, you did that right. The word separators should though. Thadh (talk) 00:30, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
- How can I do that? Abreham97 (talk) 00:33, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
- Just add ፡ instead of a blank space between words. Thadh (talk) 00:45, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
This is an improper use of references. References are external resources that validate the information in the entry. Furthermore notes such as "Although the ኛ suffix is the most frequently used to indicate languages, even though there are some few exceptions" should be on the page for that suffix, not on its derived terms. DTLHS (talk) 16:17, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah, you're right, thanks. I'll fix it. Abreham97 (talk) 16:45, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
- Anyway አርሜን is just a root not Armenia which is in amharic አርሜንያ. I apologize again for my ignorance of the wiki markup norms and conventions. Abreham97 (talk) 16:56, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
