[edit]From earlier Werf, from Middle Low German werf, from Old Saxon hwerf (“wharf”). The sense “shipyard” probably under influence of cognate Dutch werf. Also cognate with Old High German warb, Old English hwearf, Old Norse hvarf. Derived from Proto-Germanic *hwerbaną, whence German werben. See English wharf for more.
