Inherited from Middle French [Term?], from Old French agriper (to snatch), from Frankish *angrīpan (to seize), from Proto-Germanic *ana- (on-) + *grīpaną (to take, seize), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrebʰ- (to take, seize, rake). Cognate with Middle Dutch aengrīpen (to grasp, seize), Old High German anagrīfan (to touch, grasp), Old English grīpan (to seize, snatch, take, apprehend). More at grip.
