From Old French berçuel (diminutive of bers) from Vulgar Latin berciolum diminutive of *bertium, from Gaulish *berta, from Proto-Celtic *bertā, variant of *bereti (to carry).

Compare Old Irish bert (bundle). Cognate with Catalan bressol, Portuguese berço and Galician berce.
