From Vulgar Latin *bicŏrnĭa (anvil), from Latin bicornis (two-horned), from bi- (two) + cornī (horns), nominalized in the feminine with -a. Cognate with Spanish bigornia, Galician bigorna, French bigorne, early modern Italian bicornia, Andalusian Arabic, Moroccan Arabic, and Algerian Arabic بقرنية (buqurnīya).
