[edit]From Old Danish etærkop, ederkoppæ; ultimately from Proto-Germanic *aitrą (“poison”) + *kuppaz (“something round”). Identical in formation to English attercop and Old Swedish eterkoppe (whence dialectal Swedish etterkoppa).
