[edit]13th century. From an original Old Galician-Portuguese verrolho (under the influence of ferro (“iron”)), from Vulgar Latin *verruculum, from Latin vericulum, diminutive of verū (“dart”). Compare the development of Portuguese ferrolho. Cf. also that of Spanish cerrojo.
