From Proto-Finno-Ugric *kerjä- ~ *kerä- (“to request”). Cognates include Finnish kerjätä (“to beg”), Komi-Permyak корны (korny, “to beg”), Udmurt курыны (kuryny) and Northern Sami gearjidit (“to beg”).
