[edit]Borrowed from Middle Low German landen, derived from the cognate form of German Land (“land”), ultimatively from Proto-West Germanic *land, from Proto-Germanic *landą, from Proto-Indo-European *lendʰ- (“land, heath”). Replaced native länden.
