[edit]Borrowed from Middle Low German schēn, from Old Saxon skehan, from Proto-West Germanic *skehan, from Proto-Germanic *skehaną (“to move quickly, emerge”).
Cognate with German geschehen and Dutch geschieden. Norwegian skje and Swedish ske were also borrowed from Low German.
