Inherited from Old Polish srom, from Proto-Slavic *sȏrmъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *śarmas, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱórmos (shame, grief, torment, pain), from *ḱer-. Cognate with English harm and Persian شرم (shame).
