[edit]From Old Norse svar (“answer, reply”), either derived from the verb svara or inherited from Proto-Germanic *swarō (“solemn statement”), cognate with English swear. Compare also the compound *andaswarō (“reply”) in English answer and Danish ansvar (“responsibility”).
