[edit]From Proto-Finnic *topi, from Proto-Germanic *dawīni-, *dawēn-, or *dawa-. Compare Old Norse dán (“death”), Icelandic sví-dái (“dead (of natural causes, for farm animals)”), and Old Norse dá (“unconsciousness, hibernation”), respectively. Cognate to Livonian te’b, tö’b.
