[edit]Borrowed from German Wespe, English wasp, Yiddish וועספּ (vesp), Italian and Latin vespa, all ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wóps (“wasp”). Compare Romanian viespe, French guêpe, Dutch wesp, Latvian vapsene. Distantly related to Russian оса (osa), Polish osa, Welsh gwchi (“drone”).
