Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Classical Latin cēna, from Old Latin cesna, from Proto-Italic *kertsnā, from Proto-Indo-European *kért-sneh₂ (portion), derived from the root *(s)kert-, from *(s)ker- (to cut off). The irregular development of Latin ē into /ɛ/ is perhaps due to influence from the open stressed vowel of Logudorese chena.[1]
