These individuals were recovered from Playskool funerary sector. Their sex, aged, stature and some dental and bone lesions were identified. The types and quantities of funerary goods and the stone cists tombs’ organizational patterns inside the cemeteries were analysed to determine horizontal (status) and vertical (rank) social differences between the funerary contexts. A paleodemographic profile was developed with the osteological collection of the Cartago phase that reflects the possible life conditions of the populational segment under study.

Since human skeleton represent the closer biological evidence to past populations, it was possible to obtain general information about health and nutritional conditions of these individuals of Colima. The health and nutrition of these individuals were analyzed through the identification of lesions in bones and teeth following the model for interpretation of stress indicators. In addition, the funerary contexts were studied using the mortuary archaeology theory to determine social differences. The results demonstrated a high frequency of dental pathologies, for example: caries, abscess and ante-mortem tooth loss. Meanwhile, the periosteal reactions were the bone stress indicator more frequent. On the other hand, the funerary context study allowed the identification of two social ranks: high and low. These social ranks did not present a clear distribution of stress indicators, but it was possible to note that individuals of both ranks were affected for dental pathologies. Following the biocultural approach in this research it was possible to evaluate how health and nutrition of Colima’s ancient inhabitants were influenced by environmental and social factors. The results indicate that the general conditions of health and nutrition of these individuals coincide with the health decline that was attributed to the transition from hunter-gather’s lifestyle to the adoption of agriculture.
Key words: human bones, stress indicators, health and nutrition.

The remains of 24 individuals were analyzed: 5 subadults (indeterminate sex) and 19 adults (4 females, 5 males and 10 of indeterminate sex). The dentition was macroscopically examined to identify five diseases: caries, dental calculus, periodontal disease, periapical lesions, and antemortem loss of teeth. Caries and dental calculus were the most common pathologies observed in the sample. These results indicated that carbohydrates and proteins were part of the paleodiet of these individuals, as well as other foods. These dietary sources were consistent with the archaeological record, since they were evidenced in the paleobotanical and faunal remains, the subsistence strategies and the technology used to obtain and process these foods. The findings from this study offer a first approximation to the association between dental diseases and paleodiet of the inhabitants of Agua Caliente. However, further research is required, applying complementary methods (isotope analysis and dental calculus) and analyzing larger human osteological collections.

These individuals were evaluated to determine if their health conditions had any relationship with the agricultural subsistence that has been proposed for this site. Based on the standardized methodology of stress indicators, a macroscopic analysis of four bone and six dental lesions was carried out. Dental caries, calculus, antemortem tooth loss, and periosteal reactions were the most frequent lesions. These lesions were identified in juvenile, young adult, and adult individuals of both sexes. Data derived from the site setting, the archaeological context, and the identification of bone and dental lesions, suggest that the ancient inhabitants of the Los Limones site may have had a mixed subsistence strategy that included activities such as agriculture, fishing, hunting, and collecting wild plants and fruits.
