Cet article propose de redécouvrir un court film réalisé par Jean-François Lyotard, intitulé L’Autre Scène. Une telle œuvre souligne l’originalité d’un philosophe qui refuse de séparer la théorie de la pratique. En partant de l’influence de la théorie freudienne sur la production du film, il s’agira de voir comment celui-ci a permis l’élaboration du concept d’« acinéma », mais aussi de comprendre le silence énigmatique de Lyotard au sujet de son premier travail filmique.

This article rediscovers a short film directed by Jean-François Lyotard, entitled L’Autre Scène. The film underlines the originality of a philosopher who refused to separate theory from practice. After first analyzing the influence of Freudian theory on the production of the film, the article will then consider how the work develops the concept of “acinema.” Finally, it will offer an interpretation of Lyotard’s enigmatic silence about his first film work.

In this essay, the author analyses "La Présence", an essay by Jean-François Lyotard concerning the ability of the commentary of an artwork to talk about "presence". According to Lyotard, commentaries designate objects of analysis, while the specificity of what he calls presence is that it resists designation. To steer away from this contradiction, Lyotard transforms his own commentary into a lively dialogue between the characters Vous and Lui whose speaking voices lead towards the ungraspable presence.

The author analyses the Gramsci Monument (2013), the ephemeral work by Thomas Hirschhorn, installed in the Bronx. The question is the following: what did the participatory work, that included the people living in the neighbourhood, actually produce?

The anthropocene is imposing itself every day with a more acute urgency that opens a precipice, so great seems the inaction. This collapse offers the possibility of a turning point. Answering the question “What should we do?” also means asking ourselves “How should we think?”

A poet and an appellate criminal defence attorney specialising in sex crimes, Vanessa Place reproduces the evidence of rape crimes presented during trials in Statement of Facts (2010). At the heart of these trials lies a trauma that legal language seeks to convey. Drawing on Jean-François Lyotard’s concepts of the differend (différend) and litigation, I ask if the documentary poem represents the traumatic event or if it simply reproduces legal language. I propose that the discourse of the law fails to account for trauma because of a mismatch between the forms of language required to establish facts in a court of law and the traumatic event itself. Yet, the transformation of this language into a poem makes it possible to indicate this mismatch while at the same time bringing the unspeakable violence of the traumatic experience to the surface of the text as read by the poet.

À partir d’une étude d’un microgramme de Robert Walser, l’enjeu sera de montrer comment l’objet miniature permet de penser la notion de destruction. En premier lieu, la miniature se présente comme l’objet que l’on cherche à conserver et qui résiste ainsi à la destruction totale. Tel est le paradoxe de la miniature : pour minuscule qu'il soit, le petit objet semble encore exister alors même qu'il devient invisible. Mais en second lieu, la miniature offre la possibilité de repenser la destruction : en tant que chose fragile par excellence, le petit objet est susceptible de subir de nombreuses modifications. Ainsi, loin de signifier la simple fin de l'existence, la destruction se conçoit comme un changement d'état, et l’appréciation d’une telle transformation devient exquise.

Through an analysis of a microscript by Robert Walser, I shall attempt to show how the miniature object throws into relief the notion of destruction. Firstly, the miniature is presented as an object that one seeks to preserve, and is thus opposed to the effectiveness of total destruction. The paradox of the miniature is the following: even though it is tiny, almost invisible, it is presupposed that it still exists and that there is still something there and not nothing. But secondly, the miniature offers the possibility of reconsidering destruction: as a fragile thing par excellence, the miniature is what is most open to change. Thus, far from being a mere end, destruction becomes change, and the appreciation of such transformation becomes exquisite.

Alors que la réception philosophique de l'idéalisme et du premier romantisme allemands a fait l'objet d'un certain nombre d'études, la recherche s'est encore peu emparée de leur connaissance et de leurs usages chez les artistes. L'ambition du colloque est d'ouvrir un espace de dialogue interdisciplinaire, nourri par des études de cas, sur le rôle joué par la découverte de la philosophie allemande classique dans les arts visuels européens et américains, du début du XIXe siècle à nos jours.

While the philosophical reception of German Idealism and Early Romanticism has been the subject of a number of studies, research so far has given little attention to the question of its knowledge and use by artists. The aim of the conference is to open up a space for interdisciplinary dialogue, informed by case studies, on the role that the discovery of Classical German Philosophy has played in European and American visual arts, from the early nineteenth century to the present day.

Ce recueil regroupe tous les poèmes de Schopenhauer (1788-1860), pour la plupart inédits en français. La vie de Schopenhauer commence et se termine par la poésie, et cette découverte invite à relire son oeuvre philosophique aussi comme le travail d'un poète.

L’entreprise philosophique est traditionnellement associée depuis Platon à la sortie de la caverne. Nous nous proposons ici d’adopter l’itinéraire inverse, en interrogeant philosophiquement les grottes et les éléments de mobilier ornés par les hommes qui ont vécu en Europe avant la fin de la dernière glaciation. Cet objet singulier invite d’abord à réfléchir sur la définition de la science préhistorique, qui ne peut être assimilée à l’étude de ce qui précède l’histoire, et sur l’unité de ce qui a été nommé « art paléolithique ». Cependant, au-delà de ces considérations conceptuelles, il convient de prendre acte du double défi dont a été porteuse la découverte de cet art au XIXème siècle. Elle a en effet permis de questionner, d’une part l’identité et l’origine de l’homme, et d’autre part l’unité de la discipline préhistorique, ainsi que sa place dans le champ des sciences. Concernant le premier point, si les interrogations autour de l’existence de l’homme fossile avaient progressivement permis, au fil du XIXème siècle, de le penser contemporain d’espèces animales disparues, la découverte de ses œuvres artistiques, initialement controversée, a fait apparaître ses aptitudes esthétiques, ses capacités spirituelles, et finalement sa pleine humanité. Pour ce qui est de la seconde question, l’art paléolithique a radicalisé et rendu tangible la situation instable des études préhistoriques, au carrefour de plusieurs sciences à la fois naturelles et humaines. L’analyse des discours et des pratiques des préhistoriens montre ainsi que ce terrain de recherche peut être considéré comme un laboratoire où se rencontrent différents modèles scientifiques. Cependant, la conception de l’homme et de la science véhiculée par la préhistoire s’est trouvée, dans les dernières décennies du XXème siècle, remise en question par de nouveaux paradigmes d’anthropologie naturalisée. À l’intersection des sciences naturelles et des sciences humaines, les études portant sur l’art paléolithique s’avèrent ainsi offrir un poste d’observation privilégié sur les rapports entre plusieurs manières de voir le monde, de comprendre l’homme, et de définir les principes de la science.

Figure incontournable de l’histoire intellectuelle chinoise, Ouyang Xiu est abordé ici à travers une étude cas de la session 1057 du concours de « doctorat », dont il fut superviseur en chef au niveau métropolitain. À travers la contextualisation minutieuse de cette session, et plus largement la mise en perspective de ce que signifiait, pour les hommes des Song, la sélection des fonctionnaires impériaux par le système des examens, il s’agit d’exposer sous tous ses aspects l’implication réciproque des pratiques lettrées et des enjeux de pouvoir dans le XIe siècle chinois. The problem addressed in this paper concerns the epistemology of chronobiology, i.e. the study of biological rhythms, especially circadian ones, and their influence on organisms and ecosystems. I take this particular field of biology to be an instance of a scientific paradigm with two largely complementary concepts at its roots : the concepts of “program” (especially “genetic program”) and of “mechanism”. My analysis argues the case for this paradigm having emerged in the field of molecular biology, as a result of the interplay between biologists, physicists and philosophers. Hence, this paper defines it “the molecular paradigm”.
The first part of my work tracks the evolution of the concept of “genetic program” along a period stretching from the seminal work of Erwin Schrödinger (What is life ?) to the later writings of Jacques Monod and François Jacob. I argue as well that this concept is deeply connected to the notion of “mechanism” and that this special relation has been brought out in the last thirty years by a host of philosophical analyses, focusing mainly on molecular biology and neurobiology. These works have thus set a new trend in contemporary philosophy of science, “new mechanistic philosophy”, whose main concern is to describe and asses the way practicing biologists try to detect mechanisms and explain their workings.
The second part argues that chronobiology has assimilated this paradigm, thereby conceiving the study of biological rhythms as the search for molecular clocks. This claim is supported by the analysis of some founding papers in this field, like the one of Colin Pittendrigh on the existence of “free running” circadian rhythms in insects and microorganisms. To substantiate further my point, I review a paper of William Bechtel and Adele Abrahamsen, who account for the discovery of drosophila's “clock gene” per, located in some neurons of the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN), and of the corresponding system of regulation through a negative feedback loop in fully mechanical terms. I contend that this account is no more tenable, since the complex function of this gene cannot be reduced to the interaction of a cluster of independent mechanisms. Then, alternative accounts must be taken into consideration, such as the one of Denis Noble and the one of Pierre Bailly, Giuseppe Longo, Mael Montevil, the latter proposing to represent biological time not as an oscillatory pattern, but by use of a two-dimensional geometrical model. The paper interprets this model on a philosophical background that extensively draws on the tradition of french “historical
epistemology”, as well as on the “biological thought” of Immanuel Kant. Concerning the latter one the paper aims to highlight the link between his reflexions on finality and organization in the living world and the emergence of new trends in the biology of his time, such as the embryological theory of Caspar Friedrich Wolff. In doing so, the argument turns to the studies of Philippe Huneman, in order to show how Kant connects three fundamental concepts – finality, self organisation and contingence – in a coherent conception of the organism. This short detour into kantian philosophy proves useful to the paper's last conclusions, via the concept of “organisational closure” introduced by Matteo Mossio and Alvaro Moreno. In these conclusions, I propose a radically new conceptual interpretation of biological rhythms, not as properties of biological clocks, but as properties of “temporally closed systems”.

In this article we examine the links between anorexia, bulimia and self expression. We start on the hypothesis that an anorexic tries to express himself or herself through his/her skinniness just as a worker tries to express himself/ herself through his/her work. In this respect the anorexic mindset seems to mirror the worker’s.
Yet we will challenge these premises on several grounds:(1) the anorexic, crushed by expectations perceived as unattainable achievements, tries instead to avoid the exaction of being “someone” . (2) skinniness allows him/her to fit into an abstract personal trait rather than assume a specific personality. (3) the anorexic  tries to go beyond mere acceptance rather than seek it.
We will then show how the strategy of anorexia meets with its intrinsic failure: skinniness does not work as a work objective, hence the anorexic is alienated in the Marxian sense. Our conclusion will explore the theme of recovery along two possible pathways.

Dans cet article nous examinons les rapports entre anorexie mentale, boulimie et expression de soi. Nous formulons d’abord l’hypothèse que l’anorexique cherche à s’exprimer dans sa maigreur comme le travailleur s’exprime dans l’objet qu’il produit. La démarche anorexique semble ainsi mimétique par rapport à l’activité du travail. Nous critiquons cependant cette idée à différents niveaux : (1) le sujet anorexique, écrasé par un sens disproportionné des réussites qu’il a à accomplir, cherche plutôt à se soustraire à l’exigence d’être « quelqu’un » ; (2) la maigreur exprime davantage un « genre » abstrait de personnalité qu’une subjectivité singulière ; (3) l’anorexique veut plutôt dépasser la demande de reconnaissance qu’obtenir cette dernière. Nous montrons ensuite comment la stratégie anorexique est constitutivement mise en échec : la maigreur ne fonctionne pas comme l’objet du travail, et à ce titre le sujet anorexique est aliéné : sans objets. Notre conclusion esquisse deux axes sur le thème de la guérison.
