REVISION 01
Pacemaker danger − Magnetic and electromagnetic fields in the vicinity of current carrying
conductors and motors can result in a serious health hazard to persons with cardiac pacemakers, metal
implants, and hearing aids. To avoid risk, stay away from the area surrounding this electrical equipment.
Before performing any motor maintenance procedure, be sure that the equipment connected to the
motor shaft cannot cause inadvertent shaft rotation. If the load can cause shaft rotation, disconnect the
load from the motor shaft before maintenance is performed. Unexpected mechanical rotation of the motor
parts can cause injury or motor damage.
Guards must be installed for rotating parts such as couplings, pulleys, external fans, and unused
shaft extensions, should be permanently guarded to prevent accidental contact by personnel. Accidental
contact with body parts or clothing can cause serious or fatal injury.
It is recommended to use a shielded motor power cable with a complete circumferential braided or
copper film/tape ground jacket around the power leads. This ground should be secured to the motor frame
from within the motor terminal box and must return without interruption to the drive ground. In addition, if
the motor and coupled equipment are not on a single common metal base plate, it is important to equalize
the equipment ground potentials by bonding the motor frame to the coupled equipment using a high
frequency conductor such as a braided strap.
Do not over grease motor as this may cause premature bearing failure.
The motor lifting hardware is adequate for lifting only the motor. Do not lift the motor and its driven
equipment by the motor lifting hardware. Disconnect the load (gears, pumps, compressors, or other driven
equipment) from the motor shaft before attempting to lift the motor.
If eye bolts are used for lifting a motor, be sure they are securely tightened. The lifting direction
should not exceed a 20° angle from the shank of the eye bolt or lifting lug. Excessive lifting angles can
cause damage.
To prevent equipment damage, be sure that the electrical service is not capable of delivering more
than the maximum motor rated amps listed on the rating plate.
If a HI POT test (High Potential Insulation test) must be performed, follow the precautions and
procedure in NEMA MG1 and MG2 standards to avoid equipment damage.
Do not operate motors with a roller bearing unless a sufficient radial load is applied so that damage
to the roller bearing does not occur.
If you have any questions or are uncertain about any statement or procedure, or if you require additional
information please contact Gulf Electroquip.

A 3-phase induction motor has two main parts: A static part called the stator, and a revolving part called
the rotor. The rotor is separated from the stator by the presence of a thin air gap. The stator consists of a
fabricated steel frame that houses and secures the laminated stator core. The stator core is made from
thin insulated laminations stacked to form a hollow cylindrical stack. At the air gap, along the inner
circumference of the laminations, are evenly spaced slots that contain the stator winding (formed coil).
The rotor core is made up of thin, insulated laminations stacked to create openings (slots) at the rotor
OD. Extruded copper rotor bars are inserted into the rotor slots and connected (brazed) at each end by
copper short circuit rings. The copper bars are swaged in this position to the slot to avoid movement as a
countermeasure against sparking and vibration. The rotor bars resemble a cage and is sometimes
referred to as a “squirrel cage” rotor.
The entire rotor core is secured to the shaft through an interference fit and the combined rotor and
shaft assembly rotates between bearings supported at each end of the motor frame.
This motor is designed with the ability to operate within a potentially hazardous area. It is required that
the equipment shall be installed in compliance with all industry, national, and site safety standards. It is
the responsibility of the end user to ensure the equipment meets or surpasses these standards.
The installation, operation, and maintenance of the motor must only be carried out by qualified or
authorized personnel. Read and understand this manual in its entirety before proceeding. This is a high
voltage (575V) unit with a risk of shock that may cause potential bodily injury or loss of life. The motor
should be disconnected from any power supply and come to a complete rest before attempting any
installation or maintenance procedures.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
2.1 Application
Gulf Electroquip DRILLMAX motors have been engineered to satisfy a wide range of applications within
the oilfield industry for drilling applications. The motor was developed to meet required specifications of
the IEC 60034-1 standard.
2.2 Transportation
Secure the motor tightly with shipping braces to make certain that it is does not shift during shipping and
result in damage to the motor.
2.3 Receiving
Thoroughly inspect the equipment before accepting shipment from the transportation company. If any of
the goods called for in the bill of lading are damaged or the quantity is short, do not accept them.
Promptly notify the freight company and make an appropriate notation on the freight bill. If any
concealed damage is discovered later. Notify the freight or express agent at once and request them to
make an inspection. Claims for loss or damage in shipment must not be deducted from the GEQ invoice,
nor should payment of the GEQ invoice be withheld awaiting adjustment of such claims, as the carrier
guarantees safe delivery.
Be sure to use the following procedure to ensure proper shipment upon receiving the motor:
1. Remove all packaging material, inspect and clean shaft surfaces, machined fits, rotate the shaft
by hand to check for any obstructions.
2. Remove any cover plates and inspect the interior for dirt or damage, loose connections, etc.

4. While in storage, the motor space heaters should be energized. Please refer to the outline
drawing of the manual.
5. During storage it is necessary to rotate the shaft by hand at least 20 revolutions per month.
6. During storage the bearings should be lubricated every 6 to 9 months.
NOTE: If the motor is stored for one year or longer, it must be returned to manufacturer for bearing
and seal inspection and reconditioning.
Improper storage of electrical machines can result in seriously reduced reliability. Though precautions
are taken at the factory, if the motor is exposed to a humid atmosphere, the bearing or surrounding
area can rust, potentially contaminating the bearing. If stored improperly, the electrical insulation may
absorb an excessive amount of moisture leading to the motor winding failing to ground.
2.5 Handling
Lifting and handling should be completed using the appropriate lifting points. For this reason, lifting lugs
are incorporated into the frame design to provide for lifting the motor in its horizontal orientation. Any
handling straps for lifting or shipping should be placed on the body/frame of the motor.
The motor shaft should never be used for lifting. Damage to the shaft surfaces can place an axial,
stationary or shock load on the bearings and may result in improper motor operation. Improper handling
of the motor that results in damage will void the warranty.
The provided lifting lugs and lug features are intended for lifting the motor only. These lifting points
should not be used on a motor with installed accessories i.e. a junction box, blower or brake assembly.
Failure to observe this precaution may result in bodily injury.

Throughout the life of the motor, it will be necessary to test the state of the motor’s insulation. This
procedure is best completed using a Meg-ohm meter. The test generally consists of detaching all the
leads from the motor and attaching one lead to a Meg-ohm meter and the other side of the meter to
ground. Use a Meg-ohm meter with a minimum of 500 VDC output and is capable of taking resistance
readings to ground. For more information on how to run this test, please do not hesitate to contact Gulf
Electroquip. The following chart can be used to assess the state of the motor insulation. Winding
insulation resistance measurements will be in units of megaohms.
3.1 Inspection
Before installing the motor, it is recommended that the unit be thoroughly inspected for indications of
damage or potential malfunctions. Carefully examine the exterior surfaces of the motor for deep
scratches, dents, damaged guards, loose or missing bolts, screws and other attaching parts. Remove
the screens, louvers or covers from the ends of the motor and inspect the rotor and stator and other
internal components for loose or damaged windings and lead wires, loosely mounted components, and
the presence of moisture or other foreign material.
Remove all shipping materials such as blocks, straps, tapes, rubber packing, paper or other material
used to restrict movement of the rotor during shipment. Use low pressure compressed air, 25 PSI
maximum, to blow out all packing residue and dust from the interior of the motor. Turn the rotor by hand
to make certain that the shaft rotates smoothly and without binding.

REVISION 01
The motor and driven load should be located and leveled on the mounting base. Care should be taken to
eliminate any misalignment resulting from parallel, angular, axial or a combination of misalignments. Dial
indicators and micrometers shall be used to align the motor shaft and the driven load to eliminate any
misalignment conditions during installation. In arrangements where the motor uses a pinion mounted on the
drive end and is directly coupled to a gearbox, care shall be taken to strictly adhere to the equipment
manufacturer’s manual (top drive manual) to ensure parameters like backlash, mounting distance, gear
contact percentage, axial end play, etc. are within specified parameters.
Soft foot is the condition where the motor does not sit flat on its base and only three of the four mounting
points support the motor. When the fourth mounting point is clamped down the motor frame or mounting
skid is distorted causing possible vibration or erroneous alignment information. Soft foot can be corrected by
loosening each mounting point one at a time, measuring the relative movement with a dial indicator, and
shimming under the foot to eliminate that relative movement. Care shall be taken during installation to
eliminate “soft foot condition”.

3.3 Installation
Please review the following list before attempting to install the motor:
1. Complete the inspection of the motor prior to installation. If the motor requires a pinion and/or a
brake hub, these must be installed before installing the motor on the top drive assembly.
2. Please follow the instructions for lifting the motor per the installation manual. Remove access
covers from the motor as needed before lifting.
3. The GEQ DMX175T motor is designed to operate in the vertical position with the drive hub
mounted on the bottom side and the brake assembly (customer-supplied) mounted on the top side.
Mount the motor to a secure, substantial structure to be sure the motor does not vibrate
excessively during operation. Be careful not to damage the surface of the interfacing components,
the motor shaft or to allow the motor to collide with any structures while the motor is suspended
from a crane during the installation process.
4. Once the motor is close to the desired position, be careful to align the interfacing components and
the mounting surfaces. Check that the motor is in the proper orientation and that the motor will
have the correct direction of rotation.
5. Bolt the motor into place using the mounting bolts. Torque all bolts to specifications listed in the
Appendix of this manual.
6. With the motor securely bolted in place, the next step is to connect the three (3) electrical power
leads of the motor. This motor has tabbed connections within the motor frame.

7. Care shall be exercised when connecting the starting device phase leads to the motor. The leads
must have the proper sequence applied by the Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) to obtain the
desired motor direction of rotation. Interchanging the phase sequence of any two of the power
supply leads will produce rotation in the opposite direction.
NOTE!
If there is any doubt about rotation and phasing, the motor can be “bumped” to indicate the
direction of rotation by momentarily energizing the motor. A minimum of two people should
check this, one at the motor and one at the starting device with good visual/oral communication
via radio. For “bumping” the motor to determine rotation, the starting device should energize the
motor only as long as it takes to cause the motor to “break-away” and begin to rotate. If the
rotation is incorrect, remove power from motor and allow motor to coast to a stop. Reverse
phase sequence of the power supply connections to the motor for desired direction of rotation.
8. Next, it is necessary to wire in the recommended safety interlocks such as the control system,
thermal protection, air pressure safety switch, the speed encoder and any other safety systems
that the end user deems necessary.
9. Any other required and remaining mechanical or electrical systems should be installed at this time
(e.g., the motor cooling blower, braking equipment, motor speed encoders, etc.).
10. Space heaters (if provided with the motor) are mounted inside the DE end shield and should be
energized continuously only during motor storage. (Note: During start-up and operation of the
motor, the heaters must be de-energized.) See motor outline drawing for space heater wire
diagram and power information (If applicable)
11. The bearing housings are equipped with seals and include provisions for re-lubrication during
operation. Each bearing is equipped with a provision to mount one 100-ohm platinum resistance
temperature detector (RTD) for monitoring temperature. With the RTD, the temperature of the
bearings can be monitored during operation as the customer deems necessary. If RTDs are
monitored, the initial alarm point can be set at 100°C and shutdown initiated at 110°C. Otherwise,
if the established bearing temperatures are considerably lower, the alarm setting can be adjusted
to 10°C above the normal operating bearing temperature and the shutdown point can be set
another 10°C above the alarm.

12. The stator of the motor is equipped with six 100 ohm platinum RTDs (embedded between the
stator coils), two per phase. The stator coils embedded in the laminated core receive a global VPI
of non-hygroscopic resin. The stator insulation system is Class H. The temperature of the stator
coils can be monitored during operation utilizing the RTDs that are installed inside the wound
stator assembly. For proper insulation protection, the RTD relays shall be initially set for alarm at
185°C, and shutdown at 195°C max.
13. Reinstall any access panels or exhaust covers that were removed during the unpacking of the
motor. At this time, it is completely necessary to run safety wires through heads of the bolts on the
exterior of the motor and secure all safety wire.
14. When completely assembled and installed on the top drive, this GEQ DRILLMAX motor will meet
an ingress protection rating of IP44 or better. Do not install any accessories on this system that do
not meet this standard. Please refer to IEC 60529 for additional information on ingress protection
ratings.
15. To complete the installation of the motor, it is now necessary to install the system ground wire onto
the motor. Please follow all local IEC codes for ground circuit sizing and installation.
Cabling used to connect to main motor terminals must have a temperature rating
greater than 110°C and shall be sized (size and insulation) for the maximum motor current.
Careful alignment of machines is essential to prevent excessive vibration, hot bearings, or shaft
failures. Interference fits shall be used between the motor shaft and the drive/brake hub.

current values listed in this manual. The phase currents should be balanced within +/- 5%.
3. Temperature-monitoring equipment (if provided with motor) must be available, monitor the stator
and/or bearing RTD temperatures for safe operation. Any sudden change in temperature on
either stator RTD’s or bearing RTD’s is cause for shutdown. Otherwise, temperature should
gradually rise and stabilize within approximately a 4-hour period.
4. Check the motor frame and enclosures for evidence of any excessive vibration. If the motor
frame or enclosures are vibrating excessively, the motor should be shut down and the cause of
vibration located and corrected.
5. Once the motor is started, it will remain at approximately the rated speed unless voltage is lost to
the main power terminals. The machine will trip the drive protection if the load applied to the shaft
is increased to a value outside of the normal operating limits or the torque of the load exceeds the
break down torque for which the motor is designed.
6. Normally, the VFD will contain relays to protect the motor from overcurrent, over temperature,
stall, and excessive torque. These relays will open and disconnect the motor from the electric
drive when abnormal conditions occur. Vibration detection devices may also be used to
disconnect the motor during excessive vibration events.
The motor is designed for use with a variable frequency drive (VFD). Please refer to the data in
Appendix or the motor nameplate for operating data to ensure that the drive is setup to run the motor at
rated motor electrical conditions.

Steam clean only the external surfaces of the motor. Do not direct the spray at motor openings or
the plastic covers.
When steam cleaning is complete, let excess fluid drain from the motor.
Remove plastic covers or protective covers and tape from the motor. Clean the inside of the motor
by using a vacuum cleaner or dry low pressure compressed air, 25 PSI maximum, to remove any
accumulation of dirt, dust, or other gritty particles. Stubborn deposits of grease, oil or similar
substances on the metal components that are located away and clear of the windings and
insulating components may be cleaned using a clean cloth moistened with a nonflammable
solvent.
Deposits of grease, oil, or similar substances on the winding or insulating components should only
be removed with a clean dry shop cloth. Consult with GEQ in Houston, Texas if the winding or
insulating components are contaminated to an extent where wiping with a cloth will not remove
the contaminants.

Do not hurry the drying-out process. Never permit the temperature of the motor to
exceed the maximum allowable temperature rise marked on the name plate.
4. 6 Maintenance Record
It is advisable to maintain a record of the insulation resistance and humidity during measurements for
each motor. The measurements, taken at maintenance intervals, will provide a means of detecting a
gradual deterioration of the winding insulation. Such records should list the prevailing site conditions,
such as the test voltages, ambient temperature and humidity, at the time of each test since these
conditions will affect the results.

The bearings are lubricated with Shell GadusRail S2 Traction Motor Bearing grease. During construction at
the factory the bearings are packed with a reserve of grease.
Relubrication is required on the motor. Fittings are provided for both top and bottom bearings. A pressure
relief vent has access to the same bearing cavity; this should be removed, if possible, during the
relubrication process.
Each bearing should be relubricated with approx. 10 grams of grease every 6 months or 2500 hours of
operation, whichever occurs first. Do not over grease the bearings, damage can result from too much
grease in the bearings.
The vent should never have grease pumped into it; it will lose its ability to vent the grease cavity and result
in potential damage to the bearings. Should it become clogged with grease or other matter should be
replaced. Under no circumstances should the vent be cleaned with solvent.
If GadusRail grease is not available, please consult Gulf Electroquip or lubricant supplier for compatible
and suitable greases. It is strongly recommended that greases not be mixed.
At each lubrication interval and during preventive maintenance inspections, the grease seal area and
adjacent shaft area should be inspected for signs of excessive leakage. If excessive leakage is present,
the seals should be replaced, and the shaft and seal sleeves repaired or replaced as necessary.
Should it become necessary to remove the bearing from the motor, it should be thoroughly inspected for
wear or damage prior to re-installation and replaced if necessary. The seals of the bearing housing should
also be inspected for wear or damage and replaced if necessary. When re-installing the bearing, the
bearing should be hand packed with grease and the bearing housings should be packed to 1/2 to 2/3 full
with grease. Care should be taken to ensure that no foreign material is allowed into the grease, bearing or
bearing housing.
Monitoring of bearing temperature can provide a warning of an impending failure of a bearing and
prevent costly mechanical damage resulting from bearing failure. The operating temperature of a
bearing can vary depending on load, speed, and the amount of grease in the bearing. Monitoring of
bearing temperature should focus on a sudden increase in bearing operating temperature over
temperatures which have been observed as normal for a specific motor. A bearing should be closely
monitored if it reaches 230oF (110oC). The motor should be shut down and the bearing and seals
inspected. If the operating temperature of the bearing reaches over 257oF (125oC) the bearing should be
replaced. The described limits above are to be determined by measurement of the temperature by
resistance temperature detector (RTD).

4.8 Troubleshooting
The most important way to keep a unit running with very little down time is to set up a program for
intelligently analyzing the malfunctions, and making the necessary corrections. Although regular
preventive maintenance inspections are conducted, be alert between inspections for any signs of motor
trouble. When a minor problem is located, correct it immediately. Minor defects can result in costly
repairs and down time. Some of the more common symptoms, are found in the following chart.

Movimiento Final Pre-Carga Estimada
EJEMPLO:
Movimiento inicial 0.002”
Lainas(shims)a remover: 0.007”
Pre-Carga: -0.005”

The main components of the GDM are generally not considered field-replaceable by design. The
maintenance practices and schedules defined in this section of the Operations & Maintenance Manual, are
meant to keep the main top drive components in working condition until major overhaul and refurbishment
periods are scheduled out of the field.
Therefore, the only spare parts Premium recommends are consumables that consist of fasteners, seals, o-
rings, wiring, fuses, safety wire, and a motor coupling repair kit. Additionally, because these spares are
consumables, they are normally readily available to the customer through many outlets and often already
kept on-site. Depending upon the consumables stocking philosophy of the end user, Premium can
customize consumables kits that are tailored to the customers’ specific needs.

Section 1 – Introduction
Dropped objects derive their capability for damage and harm from the conversion
of their potential energy to kinetic energy prior to impact.
Static dropped object - A static dropped object is a solid object, initially at rest,
that falls from its original position under its own weight. Examples of static
dropped objects include a nut dislodged in a rig derrick, or a fallen cable tray due
to corroded fastenings.

Safety Requirements
It is essential that proper practices and procedures are followed to maintain safe
and reliable operation. These practices and procedures are defined in the
respective GDM manuals and are the recommended methods of performing
operations and maintenance.
Perform a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) before starting any tasks. It is important to
insure that all personnel are clear of the work area before performing dangerous
tasks.
Always wear basic Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - hard hat, safety
glasses, and safety boots when working or using equipment. Secondary PPE
may be needed for certain tasks.
Insure you have read all warning and caution information provided for safe
operation.
1. Isolate energy sources. Verify with meters or functioning of equipment that this
has happened.
4. Always conduct a JSA prior to starting any task. Always insure that personnel
and equipment safety are never jeopardized.

2) All cap screws are to be torqued to the values shown on the Premium
torque chart. Any deviation from the torque chart is noted on the service
manual drawings or in the assembly work orders.
6) All caps crews or fasteners requiring the use of Wedge Lock washers
must be torqued to the recommended Premium or washer
manufacturer’s specification.
7) Slotted nuts can used on threaded pins and cap screws that have a drilled
thread that will accept a cotter pin when the nut is installed. The cotter pin
must be opened sufficiently to prevent it from dislodging.
8) Tab lock washers are designed to lock in the slot of the jam nut. At a
minimum, one tab must be bent into place.

Safety Wire
2) Whenever the part has the possibility to fall without being contained.
1) If the bolt is captive in such a way that even when loose, the bolt and/or
the part it retains cannot fall.
2) Where the style of fastener will not allow holes to be drilled (button, flat or
pan head bolts). Where possible, internal/external lock washers or wedge
lock washers should be used. If a lock washer cannot be used, LOCTITE
Threadlocker should be applied to threads.
Stainless steel lock wire (twisted per conventional standards) is typically used
where space will not allow use of wire rope.
1) The use of 1/16” diameter wire rope is recommended for fasteners and
wired bolts to prevent loosening. 1/16" wire rope can also serve as fall
restraint for small safety bolts or pins.
2) The use of 1/8" diameter wire rope is recommended as a fall restraint for
items up to 100 lbs.
3) The use of 3/16" diameter wire rope is recommended as a fall restraint for
items between 100 and 400 lbs.

Pin Retention
1) For pins up to and including 0.750” in diameter, use a safety pin 0.125” or
larger.
2) For pins .0750” to 1.375” diameter, use a minimum ¼" bolt and Stover nut.
3) For pins 1.5” and 4.00” diameter, use a minimum 3/8" bolt and Stover nut.
4) For pins 4.25” and 6.00” diameter, use a minimum 1/2" bolt and Stover
nut.
Notes
1) It is recommended that safety wire should not be used to lock more than
three cap screws at a time.
2) When using a wedge lock washer, a film of dry moly must be applied to
both sides of washer as well as the screw threads.
4) Never install capscrews without lubrication, other than when using metal
locking nuts.
5) Leave only enough slack wire on pins and fasteners to allow pin removal.
6) It is important to not have excess safety cable when using. Extra length
could allow an object to break the cable as it falls.
10) Where there is a possibility of exposure to the sharp end of a cotter pin, it
should be wrapped fully around the nut.
