What is the role of journalists in relation to public sphere and political debate? The main goal of this study is to investigate the relationship between the local press, citizens and civic practices. It takes as starting point a dual theoretical approach, the theory of deliberative democracy and the movement of public journalism, to assess the scope of a conception of “deliberative journalism.” Under the project “Citizens’ Agenda: journalism and political participation in the Portuguese media “, a questionnaire was delivered to 45 journalists from eight regional newspapers in Portugal. The results show that although the journalists appreciate the principles underlying the public and deliberative journalism movements (which suggests that a deliberative consciousness is emerging), also express an conventional journalism approach.

The dependency theory of the media system was developed in the 1970s when mass media were the dominant source of information. Today, at a time when media choices have become abundant, studies are needed to understand the phenomenon of media dependence in light of new dimensions made important by the transformations that have taken place in the social and media fields—where the coexistence of mass media with social media platforms stands out. As large-scale crises rarely occur and the media environment changes rapidly, it is important to analyze how media dependence relates to choose and trust in different media (traditional media vs. social media) in times of crisis. Several questions arise. What is the trust attributed by individuals to social media as sources of information about COVID-19? How well informed are the individuals who choose these sources as the main sources of information? From a questionnaire administered to 244 individuals in Portugal, during the first week of the state of emergency (March 2020), this research seeks to identify how people gained access to information about COVID-19, how they acted critically towards the various sources and how they assess the reliability of different media. Finally, it analyzes the association between the type of medium chosen and adherence to misinformation content about the virus. The results reveal the existence of a phenomenon of dependence on the media, with a strong exposure (both active and accidental) to informative content, with conventional media being privileged as the main source, and positively distinguished in terms of confidence. Finally, a statistically significant association of a positive sign was identified between the use of social media as the main source and the acceptance of misinformation.

For that, it sets out to examine how deliberative democracy can provide new ways to consider educational practices, from a civic perspective. In other words, it seeks to identify the possible and advantageous approaches linking the ideals of deliberative democracy and the educational process. It starts reviewing the idea of public deliberation, presenting it as a proposal to achieve informed, participated and founded decision-making. It could be possible to obtain a more civic and autonomous process of education through an ethical use of discourse (Habermas). In the second part of the article, we will attempt to show how deliberative ideals can be applied, advantageously, in the classroom. To this extent, the autonomy of individuals (students) to participate in reasoning processes of problem solving as well as the ability to receive and accommodate different views and diverse experiences will be emphasized. This perception highlights the need to incorporate deliberative normative ideals in the classroom.

Abstract This article assumes the determining status that agenda-setting has in civic life, taking into account the ability of the media to influence the projection of events in public opinion, and shape social reality. The main objective is to analyze how one of the most significant theories in media studies is today challenged by social and political behaviors made possible by the new media. At the same time, and conversely, this text enunciates civic and political implications of agenda-setting practices now reconfigured. Specifically, the article aims to answer the following

In the digital age, however, there are now multiple channels and sources, allowing individuals to construct their own, personalised agenda. The growing number of information channels, each with a small number of users, is dividing audiences. Increasing fragmentation has been compounded by the way individuals access news: as the number of news sources increases, audiences use technologies to filter and customise access to information, according to personal likes and interests. So, who sets the agenda in the digital age? The audience or the media?

As a starting point, we hypothesize that the blogosphere constitutes a particular form of public sphere in a discursive space, with a political density, in which practices of deliberation can take place. We will evaluate the debate concerning the identification of the blogosphere with the concept of the public sphere in order to develop this argument. We will do it by referencing the normative requirements of the deliberative model and patterns of interaction between authors and readers of blogs. By means of this approach, it will be possible to 1) confront the conditions for the existence of deliberation with the critical points of the generalized use of the blogosphere; 2) identify the basic elements of a framework of analysis to assess the existence of deliberative practices in the blogosphere; and 3) summarize the results of empirical studies conducted on this subject. Concerning these issues, we will analyze the quality of the debate around the concept of "austerity” in two blogs that are politically connected with parties. Data showed the prevalence of homophily, which is embodied in a cyberbalcanization phenomenon. Therefore, all the discursive process is characterized by well-defined polarization patterns, supported in extreme views. We concluded that the concept of deliberation does not apply to the more general type of communication in these two political blogs. It could be applied to a concept of participation; however, from a deliberative standpoint, it could only be understood as a lighter form of social interaction, with little density in a political plan.

These issues take an added dimension with the sharing of information online, via mobile communication devices. With this article we aim to understand the transformations of the notions of public and private in everyday life, taking as a focus of analysis the use of mobile communication devices. With specific reference to the smartphone, we will characterize the nature of the boundaries between public and private, permeated by new behaviors that raise new issues. We’ll start revisiting the notions of public and private in order to evaluate its application to “new situational geographies of social life” (Meyrowitz,1986), to explore the following questions: “In what terms is it appropriate to think of public and private today?”; “How do we conceptualize the distinction between these two spheres?” And still: “How do we apply these concepts to the most common routines of everyday life?”. Taking into account the data collected under the Public and Private in Mobile Communications Project, we’ll seek the answer to two main research questions: 1) “Are the notions of public and private still present today?” and 2) “Taking those notions as guidelines, to what extent do mobile phones contribute to a new way of thinking about public and private?”. To conclude, the consistency between these data and the conceptualization proposed in the framework of this study will be evaluated

The main goal of this study is to investigate the relationship between the local press, citizens and civic practices. It takes as starting point a dual theoretical approach, the theory of deliberative democracy and the movement of public journalism, to assess the scope of a conception of “deliberative journalism.”
Under the project “Citizens’ Agenda: journalism and political participation in the Portuguese media “, a questionnaire was delivered to 45 journalists from eight regional newspapers in Portugal. The results show that although the journalists appreciate the principles underlying the public and deliberative journalism movements (which suggests that a deliberative consciousness is emerging), also express an conventional journalism approach."
with the notions of public and private, and, among them, the issue of privacy under a new perspective.
To conclude, the consistency between these data and the
conceptualization proposed in the framework of this study will be evaluated
