The model equations are discretized using unstructured grids with triangular and quadrilateral cells, which allows for application to real field studies with complex geometries at the dam site. In comparison to other models, a novel dual-mesh approach, with separate meshes for hydraulic and sediment calculations, has been developed. The vertical dam erosion is modeled using empirical sediment transport formulas. Furthermore, the lateral widening of the dam breach caused by gravitational induced slope failures is considered with a geometrical approach. Results of test runs are investigated for simple dam breach cases to assess its capability in modeling vertical and lateral erosion during breach formation. The numerical approaches are implemented in the freely available software BASEMENT [1]...
Channel enlargement with an abrupt expansion section induces flow condition changes and bed level... more Channel enlargement with an abrupt expansion section induces flow condition changes and bed level aggregation in case of mobile bed and bed load supply. To reproduce and to predict these processes numerical 1d simulations with a single-and a multi-grain approach have been performed. The flow and bed level characteristics for the equilibrium state are compared with data of laboratory tests achieved under similar geometrical conditions. The hydraulic model calibration is performed by varying bed roughness values. The bed load transport processes are calculated by the formula of Meyer-Peter and Mueller (1948) in case of single-grain simulations and by the formula of Hunziker and Jaeggi (2002) in case of multi-grain simulations. The single-grain model is calibrated by inducing bed form values in the enlarged section. Further, the multi-grain model calibration is adjusted with an increased hiding function exponent. In each model the laboratory test could be well reproduced concerning bot...

The governing equations are solved using an explicit finite-volume method combined with a Godunov-type approach. For spatial discretization, a mass-conserving dual-mesh approach with separate, unstructured meshes for hydrodynamic and sediment computations is developed allowing for accurate terrain representation. The surface erosion is modelled with the Exner and sorting equations for multiple grain classes in combination with empirical bed-load transport formulas and advection–diffusion equations for suspended-load transport. Additionally, the lateral breach widening caused by gravitationally-induced slope failures is considered using a novel algorithm adapted for unstructured grids. The model is successfully applied to two recent laboratory experiments including plane and spatial dike breaches, and a field-scale embankment breach. Detailed comparisons between measured and simulated laboratory spatial breach formations confirm the basic model assumptions.
