subjectivity and power. It provokes a particular tension
between philosophical ontology, politics and
psychoanalysis, and it is interesting to track how in
the unstable field of the ‘human’ animality produces
itself in a radical way. Gainsaying the fact that animality
has traditionally been consigned to non-historical
nature, animals have a history. But the logic of this
history does not conform to the optimism of the
humanistic discourse of progressive liberation and
emancipation of animals that would finally secure
their rights. Quite the contrary; it seems rather that
from ancient totemism, through the sequence of
exclusions and inclusions, to the present tragedy and
farce that combine slaughterhouses, pet shops and
global touristic safaris, animals have had a bad ‘career’.
Historically, they failed. But this point of failure
is at the same time a point of departure – for the
new history of metaphysics, for the new materialist
politics of nature, for the new horizon of the human
animal.

Memory is key to understanding the temporal-spatial coordinates of producing 'crisis&... more Memory is key to understanding the temporal-spatial coordinates of producing 'crisis' and acting in it. By reshaping infrastructures of past, present, and future, and interlinking places and spaces of crisis, memory often appears to be instrumental for proclaiming, experiencing, and responding to states of emergency. This chapter scrutinizes the varied workings of memory in/of crises by examining mnemonic chronotopes and exploring their potential as conceptual figures. Thinking about crises through chronotopes of memory, that is, temporal-spatial frameworks of recall involved in imagining and narrating, can reveal the mechanisms behind cycles of oppression (spaces marked as sites of perpetual crises; times of dispossession conceived as eternal) as well as ways of breaking these cycles, creating openings within them. Drawing on various situated cases, the chapter reflects on the local and global dimensions of contemporary crises-of responses to migrants from the Middle East in the Greek borderlands and their ramifications within European politics; of post-truth politics in Russia in times of the war in Ukraine; of deepening structural inequalities and protest in South Africa; and of the ways in which post-transitional dystopian imaginations in the Global South and Eastern Europe are produced as well as countered through memory practices. This article refers to the famous question of the politicization versus aestheticization of art, ... more This article refers to the famous question of the politicization versus aestheticization of art, recently discussed by Boris Groys in terms of usefulness and uselessness, or “design” and “art proper,” and, by criticizing Croys’ dualist approach, shows that in the biopolitical framework of contemporary ideology, the usefulness and uselessness pass into each other and thus create a circle within which any art is presented as individual or social therapy, or a sort of pharmakon that is both poison and cure. In search for another conception of art, the article addresses to some radical avantgarde conceptions of theatre, such as Artaud’s Theatre of Cruelty and Tadeusz Kantor’s Theatre of Death, and, reflecting through the ways of recombining elements and principles of what Alain Badiou characterized as a “leftist threat” for the theatre, demonstrates a rational political kernel of their destructive force.
The chapter approaches Hegel’s idea of reconciliation with reality, focusing on the figure of enj... more The chapter approaches Hegel’s idea of reconciliation with reality, focusing on the figure of enjoyment presented in the Preface to the Elements of the Philosophy of Right and the voice of reason as the source of an insight that elevates reason to the peak of enjoyment. The voice is theorized as what connects Hegel’s imperative of the enjoyment of reason with two other imperatives—the Kantian imperative of reason and the Sadean imperative of enjoyment. Hegel’s absolute freedom is interpreted as the form of consciousness where the opposites of Kant and Sade, i.e., moral and immoral, reason and enjoyment, intertwine. From this perspective, Hegel’s philosophy of the French Revolution and the revolutionary terror is considered as a turning point between the solitude of consciousness and the ethical community, or the “we” that creates a utopian horizon within the post-apocalyptic political-theological situation of the death of God and the end of the world.

U... more A fascinating investigation on the social and cultural status of animals and plants in history. Urban Fauna Lab is a collective, formed in 2011 in Moscow by the artists Alexey Buldakov and Anastasia Potemkina. The group is a multidisciplinary platform conceived to explore parasitic and symbiotic relationships in the urban environment and their associated adaptations.This book focuses on the role of urban animals and plants in human culture and on the economic, architectural, and political implications of the cohabitation of humans and animals in the city.Five original contributions from invited authors are accompanied by a text written by the artists and a conversation between the collective and the curator Katerina Chuchalina.
