One of these is the US-Iran crisis, where the two countries have been on the brink of a full military confrontation since January. To date, both countries continue a zero-sum game, exploiting the pandemic as an opportunity to mount pressure on the adversary. Will the common threat caused by Covid-19 be able to divert Iran and the US from the collision course and push them towards more cooperative behaviour? This policy brief focuses on the cost that current con-frontational strategies could have for both sides amid the Covid-19 outbreak, highlighting the threats and the political and strategic limitations that have emerged as a result of the pandemic. It also shows the potential gains at both the regional and the global levels that could arise for both actors if they were to adopt a new approach, based on health diplomacy and cooperation in health security.

The impact of the conflict on the industrial base and on the human and social capital has been devastating. Any effort to reintegrate non- government controlled territories (NGCT) and goverment-controlled territories (GCT) must avoid creating further dividing lines, and must provide peace dividends for the entire population. The success of future reintegration is also dependent on setting up an economic alternative which is attractive to the whole region, including the populations in the occupied territories, and to the rest of Ukraine. The financial participation of external players in providing, at least in part, peace dividends to all is essential.

Yet the valuable research results produced have largely failed to inform the public debate on EU-Turkey relations. This project aims to fill the gap between research and public debate on EU-Turkey relations by unpacking the discourses there where they exist, in particular focusing on the questions of conditionality and impact and the role that perceptions and misperceptions have played in conditioning these debates. We hope this understanding can contribute to reversing the vicious circle of mistrust and miscommunication which has bedevilled EU-Turkey relations particularly, particularly in recent years.

In the aftermath of the Arab Spring, different domestic and international dynamics are at play and the changes in the geopolitics of the Middle East have transformed the regional policies of the states of the Gulf countries. This chapter of the E-book titled "The Gulf Monarchies Beyond the Arab Spring. Changes and Challenges" draws some conclusions about recent domestic, regional and international developments in the Gulf countries and their implications for the EU and the EU-GCC relationship.
