Purpose To describe the major findings in the literature regarding associations between biological and genetic factors and social functioning, paying special attention to:(1) heritability studies on social functioning and related concepts;(2) hypothesized biological pathways and genetic variants that could be involved in social functioning, and (3) the implications of these results for quality-of-life research.

RESUME La philosophie utilitariste soutient que les politiques publiques devraient promouvoir le bonheur des gens. Cette théorie morale suscite des objections: elle serait irréaliste au plan pratique et indésirable au plan idéologique. Le principe du bonheur pour le plus grand nombre demeure donc marginal au plan politique. Dans cet article, les objections philosophiques classiques sont confrontées aux résultats récents de la recherche empirique sur la satisfaction de vivre et sont réfutées.

ABSTRACT This study is about survey questions on happiness using verbal response options, such as' very happy'and'fairly happy'. The aim is to estimate what degrees of happiness are denoted by such terms in different questions and languages. These degrees are expressed in numerical values on a 0 to 10 scale, which are then used to compute'transformed'means and standard deviations.

ABSTRACT The rational pursuit of happiness requires knowledge of happiness and in particular answers to the following four questions: 1: Is greater happiness realistically possible? 2: If so, to what extent is that in our own hands? 3: How can we get happier? What things should be considered in the choices we make? 4: How does the pursuit of happiness fit with other things we value?

Does active leisure make life more satisfying? If so, what kind of leisure activity is the greatest contributor to happiness? These questions are answered by means of data from four waves of a large-scale continuous study of the general public in Germany. Cross-sectional analysis does not show much of a relationship between happiness and last year's leisure activities, with the exception of holiday trips.

One of the aims of social indicator research is to develop a comprehensive measure of quality-of-life in nations that is analogous to GNP in economic indicator research. For that purpose, several multi dimensional indexes have been proposed. In addition to economic performance, these also acknowledge the nation's success in matters like schooling and social equality. The most current indicator of this type is the 'Human Development Index'.

Summary One of the goals of developmental policy is to create greater happiness for a greater number. Realization of that ambition requires understanding of happiness. The following questions must be answered: 1) What is happiness precisely? 2) Can happiness be measured? 3) How happy are people presently? 4) What causes us to be happy or unhappy? 5) Can happiness be raised lastingly?
