Jerusalem was destroyed and many Jews were taken captive to Babylon. However, by 539 B.C., the Babylonians were conquered by the Persians. Cyrus, king of Persia, reversed the Babylonian practice of repression of nationalism by allowing those nations who had been deported by the Babylonians to return back to their homelands and to worship their own gods. Cyrus allowed returning captives to take with them the religious objects which the Babylonians claimed as booty. He also provided them some funds to help rebuild local religious shrines. He hoped that this generosity would create local governments who were loyal to him The Return of the Jews to Jerusalem Two important accomplishments were realized by the returning exiles. First the temple was rebuilt. Second, the Law of Moses became the center of Jewish life. This happened in the following way. Shortly after Cyrus' edict, a group of Jews led by Sheshbazaar, of the Davidic line, returned to Jerusalem. However, the situation in Jerusalem was difficult and the group failed to make much progress in securing Jerusalem and rebuilding the temple. In 520 B.C., a second group of exiles returned to Jerusalem led by two men named Zerubbabel, nephew to Sheshbazaar, and Joshua. Under their leadership, and through the inspiration of the prophet's Zachariah and Haggai, the temple was rebuilt although its structure cannot be compared to the grandeur of Solomon's temple. The building of the temple began what is known as the second temple period. As we shall see, it was this temple that Herod the Great greatly enlarged and remodeled. With the rebuilding of the temple came the reestablishment of the old hierarchical social structure which had come to dominate Jewish (and Israelite) society before the exile. It has already been shown that this kind of social structure is often oppressive, especially to the peasantry that makes up the majority of the population. The oppressive nature of this stratified social structure was felt in the days of Nehemiah (Neh. 5:1-5) who enacted various reforms in an attem pt to reduce the burden of dept created b y the structure. But these reforms were only temporary.

In this study, the antioxidant potency of sequential organic and aqueous leaf extracts of Cassia ... more In this study, the antioxidant potency of sequential organic and aqueous leaf extracts of Cassia occidentalis was investigated, employing various established in vitro systems such as nitric oxide scavenging (NOS) activity, β-carotene-linoleic acid model system, hydroxyl radical scavenging (HRS) activity, reducing power, metal chelating activity (MCA) and superoxide radical scavenging (SRS) activity. The aqueous extract of the leaves of C. occidentalis was found to be most effective against free radicals, followed by the methanolic, chloroform, petroleum ether and benzene extracts, respectively. A preliminary study of qualitative and quantitative estimations of phenolics was performed, and the results were correlated with different antioxidant tests. A positive and significant (p < 0.05) correlation was observed (R² = 0.42 to 0.96) between various test systems, and the results on total phenolics showed that the phenolic compounds were responsible for the antioxidant capacity of the extracts. This study also showed that phenolics may contribute maximally to HRS (R² = 0.9236) and MCA (R² = 0.9396) and to a lesser extent to NOS activity (R² = 0.5819) and the β-carotene-linoleic acid assay (R² = 0.8213). The data obtained in the in vitro models clearly establish the antioxidant potency of leaf extracts of C. occidentalis.
The rate of exciton spin relaxation (flips) between the bright exciton states (F = +/-1) of CdSe ... more The rate of exciton spin relaxation (flips) between the bright exciton states (F = +/-1) of CdSe nanocrystals is reported as a function of shape, for dots and nanorods. The spin relaxation is measured using an ultrafast transient grating method with a crossed linearly polarization sequence. It is found that the spin relaxation rate depends on the radius, not length, of the nanocrystals. That observation is explained by deriving an expression for the electronic coupling matrix element that mixes the bright exciton states.

In order to achieve the advantage of both DOTAP (1,2-dioleoyl-3-trimethylammonium propane) and PEI (high transfection efficiency) a system was hypothesized in which DOTAP/phosphatidyl choline (PC) lipoplexes were electrostatically coated with anionic poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and cationic polyethylenimine (PEI) alternatively to finally shape a robust structure PEI-PAA-DOTAP/PC-lipoplexes (nanoplexes). The nanoplexes were found to have size of 242.6 ± 9.4 nm and zeta potential of +23.1 ± 1.5 mV. Following development nanoplexes were evaluated for cellular uptake, nuclear colocalization, transfection efficiency, and cellular toxicity in MCF-7, HeLa, and HEK-293 cell lines. In support of our hypothesis nanoplexes exhibited higher uptake and nuclear colocalization in comparison with DOTAP/PC, DOTAP/DOPE lipoplexes, and PEI polyplexes. Nanoplexes also exhibited 50-80, 11-12, 6-7, and 5-6 fold higher transfection efficiency in comparison with DOTAP/PC-lipoplexes, DOTAP/DOPE-lipoplexes, PEI-polyplexes, and lipofectamine, respectively, and significantly lower toxicity in comparison with DOTAP/PC, DOTAP/DOPE lipoplexes, PEI polyplexes, and commercial lipofectamine.
