Specific requests for proposals submissions for researchers from Imperial College London
FAPESP and IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON, signed a Cooperation Agreement for Research in 2013, aiming to implement scientific and technological cooperation between researchers from the IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON, UK, and from the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, through the funding of joint research projects.
Under the referred Agreement, as an action to promote this productive collaboration, FAPESP and Imperial College London make public this Call for Proposals for the exchange of faculty and postdoctoral researchers under the terms and conditions of the SPRINT 3rd Edition 2018 (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call32018) and hereinafter set forth.
1. Eligibility from Imperial College London side
1.1 Eligibility to submit proposals within the scope of this Call:
a. Full time members of academic or research staff at Imperial College London.
b. Imperial will only accept one application per researcher.
It will be assumed that Research staff will have received any necessary approval to undertake the proposed activity.
1.2 Eligibility for the exchange activities within the scope of this Call:
a. Any PhD student, post-doctoral researcher, academic or research staff nominated by the Principal Investigator and affiliated with the project selected for funding under this call for proposals.
b. The proposals must aim to respect the principle of reciprocity with regard to academic qualifications of those who will take part in the exchange activities.
c. Eligibility of research partners in the State of São Paulo should observe the items 3.1 and 4.2 of FAPESP call (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call32018).
d. Considering the principle of reciprocity, FAPESP exceptionally may either support PhD students from the State of São Paulo to take part in the scientific missions. In this case, the PhD student(s) must have an ongoing FAPESP fellowship during the planned exchange mission to the partner institution.
2. Fields of knowledge
This Call for Proposals invites research proposals in any field of research at Imperial.
3. Duration of the project for the exchange of researchers
Projects may be for up to 24 months duration and should take place in the time between February 1, 2019 and January 31, 2021. This period is non-extendable.

5. Funding principles
a. FAPESP will provide funding of up to the equivalent of £6,000.00 (six thousand pounds) per proposal per year and Imperial College London will provide funding of up to £6,000.00 (six thousand pounds) per proposal per year, for the duration of the grant to cover research-related mobility expenses, under the provisions of Clause 5 of the Scientific Cooperation Agreement established by the Parties (www.fapesp.br/en/8085).
b. FAPESP and Imperial College London will fund a maximum of 5 approved proposals per year.
6. Proposal characteristics for Imperial College London researchers
Applicants from Imperial College London must submit the following:
a. A Research Projecthaving a maximum of five (5) pages of scientific content, written in English jointly by the Principal Investigator at the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo and the Principal Investigator at Imperial College London. One copy of the Research Project shall be sent to FAPESP and an identical copy to Imperial College London. The Research Project must include the items listed in item 6.1 below.
b. For Imperial applicants, please submit a completed Imperial Application Form.
c. Letter of Agreement of the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo to which the PI from São Paulo is affiliated. The same document is required by FAPESP in item 6.2.3 at www.fapesp.br/sprint/call32018. The Letter of Agreement may be delivered after the notification of results of this call for proposals and before the grant agreement signature.
6.1 As described at www.fapesp.br/sprint/call32018, the Research Project must include the following items:
a. A substantive description of the exchange activities, emphasizing their relevance. The proposal must state clearly how the exchange activities to be carried out by each team will contribute to the ongoing research project funded by FAPESP and to the research being carried by the partner researcher at Imperial College London;
b. Detailed schedule of the exchange missions to be carried out by the partner team at the São Paulo institution and the São Paulo team at Imperial College London;
c. Performance indicators for the planned activities, indicating the expected results;
d. A description of each candidate’s contribution to the mission, explaining their expertise to carry out the foreseen activities;
e. Foreseen actions that will add to the impact of the exchange for Imperial College London and for the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo, e.g. by means of seminars, short courses etc.;
f. Description of how the Principal Investigators in São Paulo and in Imperial College London intend to prepare a joint research project, resulting from the exchange activities developed from the proposal submitted in this Call, to be submitted to research funding agencies accessible in their regions in order to create a medium-long-term collaboration (up to one page).
7. Submission of proposals to Imperial College London
For Imperial applicants, all application material must be submitted to globalseedfunds@imperial.ac.uk. Please note that only applications submitted to this email address (and not that of the named contact) will be considered.
8. Result of the analysis
The selection process consists of two stages:
8.1 All eligible applications will first be assessed by FAPESP and Imperial individually. In the case of Imperial, these will be considered for funding by the Cross-College Research Proposal Review Group The Group will rank the proposals based on excellence of research, fit to call, and potential strategic value of the international partnership (including potential for opportunity to leverage overseas funding).
8.2 A joint committee meeting between Imperial and FAPESP will take place where projects will be chosen based on both individual rankings, as well as strategic fit to both partners.
8.3 Imperial applicants will be informed of the results via email as soon as possible after the joint committee meeting. A formal letter confirming the outcomes will then be sent electronically to the Principal Investigator.
8.4 Final results will be announced on FAPESP (www.fapesp.br) and web portal and by means of a communication to the interested PIs (at Imperial via email).
9. Contract for selected projects by Imperial College London
Selected proposals will be subject to conditions set forth in the letter of award.
10. Grant cancellation
FAPESP or Imperial College London may cancel funding if, during the grant timeframe, a significant event justifies its cancellation in the assessment of the Joint Steering Committee, without prejudice of any other appropriate actions.
