Aleppo is one of the oldest, constantly inhabited cities of the world. The old city still bears the remains of the Hellenistic street grid and historic monuments of various periods. The area of the study “Suwayqat Ali” is located to the north of the suq (market area). It is a mixed quarter that contains public and private buildings. The area was selected due to its functional diversity, historic importance, and the serious damage it has sustained. The study presents a holistic view of the quarter: an urban analysis and the history and architecture of the most prominent buildings, including the present state. The publication is presented in English and Arabic.

Using satellite imagery to assess the state of the World Heritage property as of December 2016 in the wake of years of armed conflict, this report provides the first
thorough accounting of the impact of the conflict on Aleppo’s cultural heritage.
The conflict in the city damaged most of its cultural heritage landmarks and urban infrastructure, including the Citadel, the Great Mosque, and countless other historical buildings with cultural, religious, economic and social significance. Through a partnership between UNESCO and UNITAR-UNOSAT, the assessment combines the expertise of imagery analysts, historians, archaeologists and architects to show with great accuracy and detail the extent of damage throughout the entire World Heritage property.
Restoring cultural heritage is part of the process of healing communities in the wake of a crisis. This report provides an essential foundation to address the complex and numerous challenges facing Aleppo in organizing its reconstruction and recovery – one important step forward in the rehabilitation of the city and its vibrant cultural heritage.

While adaptive reuse stands as a sustainable method for effectively preserving and converting them into an active resource for the future, it must be supported by thorough and multidisciplinary research in order to make informed judgments and implement appropriate solutions. The paper assesses the adaptive reuse of three historic madrasas in Istanbul and examines its impact on their preservation status. The selected madrasas are Mihrimah Sultan (1548), Şemsi Ahmed Paşa (1580), and Kılıç Ali Paşa madrasas (1588). The selected case studies are presented using data from literature, archival research, and field observations, and their adaptive reuse is evaluated using criteria established in the literature. According to the findings, adaptive reuse had a detrimental impact on the cultural significance of these valuable buildings.

In particular, the article presents an architectural analysis of the most important building of the endowment, Khan al-Wazir, based on a field study conducted between 2010 and 2012. Enduring urban interventions, functional changes, war, and earthquake damage, the remaining endowed buildings represent today a unique example of urban activity and local civil architecture in Aleppo during the seventeenth century. There is a pressing need to restore these buildings in order to revive their cultural, urban, architectural, and functional values.

Conforming to the established norms of the imperial architectural style, the congregational mosqu... more Conforming to the established norms of the imperial architectural style, the congregational mosques of the 16th-century Ottoman complexes in Aleppo exhibited a radical break from the mosque architecture of the city with their centralized ground plans, hemispherical domes, and cylindrical minarets. However, they were not exact copies of those in the capital, instead, they were products of multi-leveled interactions among the center, the region, and the province. Through a historical and architectural analysis of Behram Pasha mosque, locally called al-Bahramiyya, this paper aims to clarify these influences and their deepness. It also presents the damages induced by the recent conflict in the city and the mosque’s current conservation condition.

Given its favorable location close to one of the busiest centers of consumption and cultural economy in Istanbul, Tarlabașı has become a target of urban renewal activities. The renewal project Taksim 360 began after the adoption of law 5366, known as the “renewal law.” The realized works within this project's scope failed to fulfill the urban conservation principles of preserving the social and urban fabric, reviving the spirit of the place, and retaining the traditional building techniques. The project has sparked controversy and generated additional threats to the remaining historical fabric of the area.

Unfortunately, these houses have been affected by urban developments, demographic changes, natural disasters as well as
changing requirements and negligence. On the other side, there are no detailed surveys of these houses. This paper exhibits the result of the architectural survey of 12 traditional houses in this region conducted by the teaching staff and the students of the Master Program of Architectural Conservation at Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University. Although the results of this survey is still under analysis, the paper aims to shed light on these valuable cultural assets through a brief presentation of the historic and geographic context of these houses, their main architectural and structural features and their main conservation problems.

Such unprecedented changes necessitate new visions, concepts, principles, strategies and even new paradigms.
The Second International Conference on Islamic Architectural Heritage 2019 (ISLAH 2019) entitled “The Future and the Built Environment” discussed these challenges with the focus on preservation and management of the built heritage, sustainable urban development, urban conservation and regeneration, post-crises reconstructions, applications of new technologies, the concept of place and identity and socio economic influences on the built environment.
The Conference was organized by the Faculty of Architecture & Design, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakif University, Istanbul; with the collaboration of KAED, IIUM; Department of National Heritage Malaysia.

The Great (Red) School rises majestically on one of the steep slopes of
the fifth hill in the Historic Peninsula in Istanbul, creating a distinctive
landmark on the southern bank of the Golden Horn. Furthermore, the
school plays a vital role in the Greek community as an educational
institution with a long tradition dating back to 1454. The continuity of
the building’s initial function as an educational institution had a key role
in retaining the school’s authenticity and integrity which is a registered
cultural asset since 1973. Nevertheless, the lack of a proper survey until
our examination indicated significant risks for the building with regard to
its preparedness against risks, and conservation.
This paper presents information based on our architectural survey about
the design, dimensions, architectural elements, materials, and structure
of the building. Additionally, the paper introduces the knowledge such as
the use of Western-influenced techniques with imported and local
building materials during its construction which adds to school’s value
as a cultural asset. In highlighting the significance and values of the
building, the paper hopes to raise awareness about the school’s constant
maintenance and repair.

As a part of Beyoğlu district, the quarter rises on steep slopes from the seashore to Okmeydanı on the east. Its remaining borders can be defined by Kasımpaşa on the southeast, Okmeydanı neighborhood on the east and Halıcıoğlu neighborhood on the northwest (Figure 1). Hasköy continued to be settled from Late Antiquity to our day, and it was characterized by its multi-cultural social and urban fabric. Together with Balat quarter on the corresponding side of the Golden Horn, they were the main Jewish neighborhoods of Istanbul until the midst of the 20th century.
However, the successive changes starting from the 19th century such as the establishment of the Şirket-i Hayriye shipyard in 1861, the industrialization of the quarter and the total abandonment of the Jewish community after 1950s have drastically transformed the traditional fabric of Hasköy and negatively affected its historical entity. Recently, the threats have increased due to the recent motorway tunnel and the construction of new apartments. Despite all these changes and threats, Hasköy still contains a considerable number of important monuments and traditional houses and it has potentiality to be presented as one of the historical neighborhoods of Istanbul.
All the above-mentioned reasons were taken into consideration when the quarter was chosen to be the subject of the urban conservation studio at the Graduate Studies Programme for Preservation and Conservation . The aim of the studio was evaluating the current condition of the quarter, defining the main conservation problems and suggesting suitable proposals to protect the remaining monuments and traditional urban fabric and enhance their historic value. This article stems from the evaluation of this studio-work.
