Dall’impatto sorsero nuovi modi di bere all’eccesso: sbornie epocali, malsane, curative, profetiche, battagliere, mortali, punibili, estatiche, comuni, solitarie, artistiche, visionarie, sacre, profane.

Studies on the Value of Cultural Heritage 20 IL CAPITALE CULTURALE, 2019

This simple point, which I shall try to substantiate in what follows, explains why I have thought fit to propose some areas for research, on the basis of my own investigation, trends in historiography and, last but not least, Jesuit sources (published and otherwise). Starting with an analysis of the ideas connected with historical food studies, I will focus on the Jesuits over a time-span from the 1530s to the second half of the eighteenth century, going deeper into the issue of moderation (first part) and the dietary model that developed within the Society of Jesus (second part). I shall adopt an interdisciplinary perspective, with special attention to the contribution of anthropology.

We will return to what seems to be the most profitable approach in our research area: the collaboration between different disciplines. We divided the essay into five paragraphs, in which we take account of different religious traditions: Research, where we propose a short review of the bibliography of the issue; Texts, where we include some examples of regulation of food practices in different holy texts; Foods, where we list some examples of consecrated food and present the opportunity to think on a chronology based on the food histories; Practices, where we analyze ritual models of the sacred act of cooking; Moments, where we focus especially on the case of the study of fasting.
Keywords: foodways – food history –religion – historiography – fasting

existence of the «Patchwork Religion», a trend towards the construction of a spiritual
experience characterized by the coexistence of elements from different religious traditions,
exoteric and spiritual movements. The patchwork idea focuses on the centrality
of the individual, who – more or less consciously – chooses to tap into different traditions
to build a religious sensibility. History has not yet thoroughly taken into account
the category of «Patchwork Religion». On the contrary, it has explored the concept of
syncretism, as presence in a religious belief of mythic elements, organization and rituals
from different traditions, mainly on collective experiences. Our goal is to propose a
case study to explore the heuristic potential of the category «Patchwork Religion» in
a historical research. The 1890 Ghost Dance and the teaching of the Northern Paiute
Prophet Wovoka contain all the elements that permit its inclusion in the category: the
revelation to an individual, the prophetic dimension, and the coexistence of different
religious traditions (principally Paiute, Christian, Lakota) in a single message.

Probably the first fasts did not come from a free choice, but from the lack of food.
Again probably, people began to think that a healthy renunciation was a good thing for the health of body and soul. From this belief came the idea of the goodness of fasting.

The Catholics reacted by stiffening the application of the norms about fasting and abstinence now seen as a main feature of the canonic behavior.
The transformation of the spaces of evangelization consequent to the European geographic expansion increased the interest in the rules concerning food habits. When the first European disembarked on the shores of the New World, they were confronted with unknown food and drinks. The missionaries immediately wanted to introduce the dietary rules of the Catholic Church, but American food and beverages were not so easy to classify. In many cases, a cultural translation was needed. Canonic rules needed new interpretations and their application in new geographical realities became more and more complex and diversified. In the Andean region, preachers and missionaries felt called to a struggle against drunkenness and in favor of ecclesiastical fasting.
The paper aims to analyze the transformation of the religious rules about fasting and abstinence proposed and put into practice by European Churchmen facing the Peruvian world. It also discusses the process of mutual adaptation in the context of new norms, habits and beliefs negotiated between people coming from radically different cultural spaces.
