The aim of this work was to evaluate the distribution and provide an estimation of abundance of the invasive octocoral C. riisei along the Ecuadorian coast, as well as the relationship between its abundance and different environmental variables. In a field survey, high abundances of C. riisei colonies were reported growing over corals and sessile communities at 5 of 43 sampling sites. The areas with highest relative abundance were found in the Manabí province, at two sites in Jama: Bajo Londres (44.57% coverage) and Vaca Brava 1 (20.25%). Results of ordination and grouping statistical analyses showed no significant differences between invaded and not invaded sites as regards community composition or environmental characteristics, suggesting neither biotic nor abiotic factors cou...

C. riisei is native from the Indo-Pacific region where it is an aggressive competitor. One of the major effects is the monopolization of resources (food and the space). The identification of the specie was confirmed genetically. Distribution and abundance of C. riisei was measured over quadrants located randomly at a 50 m transect positioned parallel to the coast in subtidal zone. Carijoa was found between February 2015 to February 2016 in three coastal provinces (Esmeraldas, Manabí and Santa Elena), including two marine protected areas (Galera San Francisco Marine Reserve in the north of Ecuador and El Pelado Marine Reserve in South Central Ecuadorian coast) and one area influenced by estuarine ecosystems (Jama). The highest relative abundance of Carijoa colonies where found in Jama (44.57%). This octocoral was found as an epibiont on corals (e.g. Pocillopora damicornis) and other macroinvertebrates (i.e. Pinctada mazatlanica, Muricea appresa, and Aplysina sp.). Our investigation suggests that Carijoa riisei is in advanced status from colonization in the coastal area and it is an imminent danger for autochthonous autochthonous sessile macroinvertebrates biodiversity and even greater risk for the Galapagos Islands.

ABSTRACT Guayas province is the largest urban population of Ecuador with 3 645 483 inhabitants and during the last decade urban growth has been concentrated in the canton Duran In that sense, the anthropic activities have been derived in urbanism, agricultural dev elopment, and Industrial environment, which has altered the normal conditions of adjacent aquatic ecosystems. In the present study, the presence of nitrates, nitrites, and ammonium in the sediments of Estero San Camilo (adjacent to Durán) was determined in November 2015 during the dry season. Sediment sampling was carried out in four stations considering the main productive activity of the area (industrial, urban and agricultural), in which three replicates were collected using a Van Veen dredger. There were significa nt spatial variations (p<0.05) between the average concentrations of nitrogen compounds (ammonium 27.7 ± 2.3 mg / kg, nitrite 0.64 ± 0.06 mg / kg and nitrate 54 ± 2.7 mg / kg). Nitrates and nitrites recorded the highest average concentrations in stations with the urban influence. While the ammonium presented the highest values in the season with greater influence of agricultural zones. This shows the urban activity as the major polluting effect.

Abstract Seven sites were sampled in seven scuba diving sites in the El Pelado Marine Reserve between February and May 2013, with the objective of evaluating the macrobenthic community structure. The abundance and diversity of macroinvertebrates and fishes were estimated along two transects arranged parallel to the coast. Quadrants were used to quantify the percentage of coverage of sessile organisms. Richness, Diversity (Shannon Wiener Index) and equitability (Pielou Index) were measured. We identified 64 species of invertebrates and 50 species of fish. Cnidarians, echinoderms, serranids and pomacentrids were the most abundant taxa. The greatest diversity of fish (4 bits.ind-1) and macroinvertebrates (2.87 bits.ind-1) were associated mainly with rocky bottoms. The most diverse sites were La Cabeza del Viejo, Zona Protegida, La Pared and El Cuarenta. Significant differences (P <0,05) were found between the biothic assemblages of mobile macroinvertebrates by habitats.

Three samplings per site were performed using a Van Veen grab from 0.1 m at low tide in September 2012. No statistical differences were detected between in the variances of richness and abundance species, the most abundant was the nearest branch to estuarine Universidad de Guayaquil, where the most abundant taxa were Oligochaeta, presented the higher temperature and higher salinity. While the study sites were very poor and few diverse, could be related to emissions from municipal sewage and industrial uses that changed key parameters for the survival of estuarine species such as salinity, temperature and pH.
