Abstract: This paper aims to contribute to an ethnomusicological approach to the RTP Song Contest (1964-2014). It is the longest-running Portuguese television contest and has witnessed crucial moments of Portuguese and European histories. Thus, it is important to understand its role in music composition and the representation of identities both in national and international contexts. The Encyclopedia of Music in 20th Century Portugal (2010) is the first Portuguese ethnomusicological work concerning this contest, an important contribution to launch the debate on it. So, it was my starting point considering that there is little Portuguese research concerning the role of music in television and about the RTP Song Contest in particular. It is my intention to contribute to the understanding of this musical and television phenomenon throughout fifty years. This paper is a work in progress – my Ph.D. research in Ethnomusicology, FCSH-NOVA, Lisboa – funded by FCT. Here I discuss potential approaches to the subject, regarding international scholars' contributions and a few national research findings.

I intend to raise a few questions that will help us to understand the role of this competition in the Portuguese musical and cultural scene of the 1960s. RTP Song Contest is the longest television song contest in Portugal. This competition went through several crucial moments in the recent history of Portugal, witnessing the change from dictatorship to democracy. In late 1960s, still under the authoritarian regime, several social changes took place and music played an important role in these changes, as several studies have documented. In 1969, Portugal bet on Simone de Oliveira to bring us the prize, but the result was not the expected. This event brought us many questions about the importance of the Portuguese participation in the Eurovision Song Contest and the fairness of the European evaluation. This paper intends to reflect the implications of this particular event and the importance of the Contest for the Portuguese music scene at the end of the critical 1960’s. With this paper, I intend to introduce some lines of analysis of the first ten years of the Portuguese Radio and Television Song Contest (Festival RTP da Canção—RTP Song Contest). I intend to raise a few questions that will help us to understand the role of this competition in the Portuguese musical and cultural scene of the late 1960s and 1970s, based on the study of the daily press. RTP Song Contest is the most long-life television contest in Portugal. For this reason, it is important to make a short historical overview of this period and the history of television in Portugal. At the same time, the analysis of statistical data of audiences enables us to understand the television phenomenon in the late 1960s.

COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the live show of the 65th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest that was due to take place in Rotterdam, and the EUROVISIONS International Conference team also cancelled their scheduled conference in the city. However, the Eurovision spirit is resilient and during Eurovision week many events took place online or were broadcasted on TV helping musicians, songwriters, singers, other professionals and fans to gather and celebrate. Thus, the EUROVISIONS International Conference team wanting to continue bringing together the Eurovision community of academics, musicians, professionals, and fans is organising a series of online events on the 26th, 28th and 30th of May 2020. Our focus is to reflect on how the COVID-19 situation has impacted the event and those involved: broadcasters, organisers, artists, musicians, audiences, fans. Each day we bring you pre-recorded interviews and live discussions in which you can participate.

I intend to raise a few questions that will help us to understand the role of this
competition in the Portuguese musical and cultural scene of the 1960s. RTP Song Contest is the longest television
song contest in Portugal. This competition went through several crucial moments in the recent history of Portugal,
witnessing the change from dictatorship to democracy. In late 1960s, still under the authoritarian regime, several
social changes took place and music played an important role in these changes, as several studies have documented.
In 1969, Portugal bet on Simone de Oliveira to bring us the prize, but the result was not the expected. This event
brought us many questions about the importance of the Portuguese participation in the Eurovision Song Contest and
the fairness of the European evaluation. This paper intends to reflect the implications of this particular event and the
importance of the Contest for the Portuguese music scene at the end of the critical 1960’s. With this paper, I intend
to introduce some lines of analysis of the first ten years of the Portuguese Radio and Television Song Contest
(Festival RTP da Canção—RTP Song Contest). I intend to raise a few questions that will help us to understand the
role of this competition in the Portuguese musical and cultural scene of the late 1960s and 1970s, based on the
study of the daily press. RTP Song Contest is the most long-life television contest in Portugal. For this reason, it is
important to make a short historical overview of this period and the history of television in Portugal. At the same
time, the analysis of statistical data of audiences enables us to understand the television phenomenon in the late
1960s.
Eurovisions: Perspectives from the Social Sciences, Humanities and the Arts
7, 8, 9 May 2018
Lisbon
26th May / 28th May / 30th May
18:00 to 19:30 (Berlin time) / 17:00 to 18:30 (Lisbon time)
The third edition of the International Conference EUROVISIONS is taking place on the 26th,
28th and 30th of May 2020 online, unlike our previous face-to-face editions in Tel Aviv (2018)
and in Lisbon (2018) which took place alongside the Eurovision Song Contest.
COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the live show of the 65th edition of the Eurovision Song
Contest that was due to take place in Rotterdam, and the EUROVISIONS International
Conference team also cancelled their scheduled conference in the city. However, the
Eurovision spirit is resilient and during Eurovision week many events took place online or
were broadcasted on TV helping musicians, songwriters, singers, other professionals and
fans to gather and celebrate.
Thus, the EUROVISIONS International Conference team wanting to continue bringing together
the Eurovision community of academics, musicians, professionals, and fans is organising a
series of online events on the 26th, 28th and 30th of May 2020. Our focus is to reflect on
how the COVID-19 situation has impacted the event and those involved: broadcasters,
organisers, artists, musicians, audiences, fans. Each day we bring you pre-recorded
interviews and live discussions in which you can participate.
