Following an analysis and critical positioning vis-à-vis Cabralian studies, the text examines how scholars of Cabral have portrayed his agronomic activities. It then undertakes a genealogical analysis of the Cabralian concept of people and suggests that the emergence of this concept in Cabral's discourse derives from the intersection of the development of anti-colonial nationalist thought in the former Portuguese Empire and the development of agrarian studies in metropolitan Portugal.

The article follows the career of António José Saraiva from the 1940s to the 1990s, describing his transformation from expressing a universalist and progressive idea of culture to a nationalist and romantic one, and relating it to the transformations of communist internationalism and to the developments of capitalism and globalization. Considering the ruptures, but also the continuities within Saraiva’s thought, it is argued that his commitment to the problem of alienation plays a key role in this transformation While contributing to the history of one of the most read Portuguese intellectuals of the twentieth century, this article stresses the need for historians and social scientists to move beyond – at least partially – some binary oppositions that often command our approach to culture: namely the conflict between culture and economy on the one hand, and the national and the global, on the other

It draws our attention to the international nature of this process, and takes as an example of this international aspect the case of Fernando Lopes-Graça, a well known Portuguese communist composer. Graça's turn to the national can only be fully understood in the context of the time he spent in Paris in the late 1930s, and the wider impact of French communism on Portuguese communists. Examining this case helps to draw attention to the kinds of communist connections that are usually overlooked on the grounds that they are neither the effect of a single national dynamic nor the direct result of a Soviet connection.
