The indicators measure different aspects of constraints imposed on women by social institutions, that is, laws, norms, traditions, and codes of conduct that exist in societies for centuries. The paper finds that social institutions are the most important single factor determining women's participation in economic activities outside the household.

A data set with 2,200 small enterprises chosen using random procedures in seven countries makes it possible to test the relationships between different measures. The analysis finds only limited parallels between definitions based on size, on registration, on conformity to fiscal and other regulations, and on degrees of modernization. Wide variations appear from one country to another. The term may be appropriate for examination of individual countries, especially if the analyst defines it precisely; but its use in multi-country analysis is fraught with difficulties. The informal sector is like an elephant: we may not be able to define it precisely, but we know it when we see it " Hemando de Soto'

The resulting explanation of crosscountry differences in income distribution is considerably better than what is found in the existing literature. Endowments in mineral resources, land concentration in agricultural exports, trade protection and secondary schooling are shown to be major determinants of differences in income inequality across developing countries.

The major objective of this paper is to offer a rigorous definition of the agricultural surplus based on the Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) framework. A SAM for Indonesia distinguishing between agriculture and non-agriculture is used to estimate quantitatively the magnitude of the agricultural surplus and its various components. Finally, the various meanings which have been assigned to this concept in the literature are reviewed and confronted with the definition which we derived.

To these results is added a study of income distribution that shows a decrease of inequality and of poverty since 1960.
