The paper addresses potential modes of cooperation between academic institutions and the translation industry in Croatia, a new member state of the EU. In Croatia, the forms of cooperation between training and research institutions and translations services providers are in their infancy, with almost no institutionalized links established. Therefore, one of the aims of this paper is to contribute to the promotion of the cooperation with regard to the specific area of translation quality, where this gap is acutely felt. The paper will first present a report on the present state of relations between academic institutions and the main actors in the growing translation industry in Croatia. The proposed research involves a series of questionnaires and face-to-face interviews with translation services providers on one hand and their users on the other. The questionnaires and interviews with translation services providers are conducted with a view to establishing their criteria of translation quality and methods used to satisfy them. To be more specific, the questions comprise the issues of the use of quality assurance methods like revision and tools such as Xbench, methods of quality evaluation, certification to EN 15038 and its implementation in practice, the knowledge of the relevant literature and its usefulness, as well as the translation services providers’ attitudes towards translation quality. The range of providers approached will include large and small size companies and translation departments in state-owned institutions, such as ministries and government agencies.
The aim of the second set of questionnaires and face-to-face interviews conducted with translation services users is to establish their views on the quality of translation products.
The data obtained from the two sets of questionnaires and interviews are analyzed in order to work out the details of future cooperation in this field: establishment of criteria for quality assessment applicable in both academic and professional contexts, joint organization of workshops on translation quality targeted to translation services providers, raising awareness of translation products users about translation quality criteria and the benefits of obtaining quality products. The results serve to establish a framework for concrete cooperation in the area of translation quality, with a view to extending it to other areas of interest to both academic researchers and translation providers and users.

The intention is to trace down the evolvement of a particular discourse type with the aim of establishing points of stability/instability within it as a manifestation of socioculturally conditioned discursive shifts. The methodological concept, i.e. textual analysis, conceived as including intertextual and linguistic analysis, drawn from the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis as developed by the British linguist Norman Fairclough, is in this analysis complemented with other concepts used in sociolinguistics (Labov) and narrative theory. The shifts observed within the complex generic and discursive configuration of the Embargo, such as a shift from overt to covert modes of the transmission of the story and less prominent linguistic heterogeneity, point to deeper shifts within the order of discourse of the media, which require more extensive application of Fairclough's.

Eleven Croatian source texts are presented from a wide variety of fields with a brief for their translation into English. These texts include media, educational, legal, economics, medical, cultural, historical, literary, tourism and culinary texts. A Skopos approach is followed in their translation so that the English target texts fulfil a functional purpose that is similar to the functional purpose achieved by the source texts in Croatian. Theoretical principles of text analysis are represented in a clear and direct way and show how the translator was guided by these to achieve a functionally appropriate English translation. Annotations in this handbook guide the reader to identify the inter-cultural and inter-lingual differences between Croatian and English and how these can be addressed and resolved. Particular attention is paid to the challenges faced by translators from Croatian as their A- or dominant language into English as their B- or non-dominant language. This handbook is a step-by-step guide for those wishing to acquire practical skills to translate texts across a wide variety of fields.

Thus, successful translation of tourist texts assumes that translators act as cross-cultural mediators on a number of levels. The rather low quality of translation in the tourism sector has been pointed out by several Translation Studies scholars. However, not much systematic empirical research on the quality of translation in this sector has been carried out. This paper analyses a corpus of multilingual websites produced by Croatian tourist boards. In the analysis of the data I rely on the criteria for assessing translation quality of web translation developed by Pierini (2007), and place a special focus on the achievement of pragmatic level equivalence between source and target texts as a major criterion of successful cross-cultural communication in the translation of tourism discourse.
