Who is missing? What are the main causes of absences and cancellations of scheduled visits to the Museum of Life? These questions express a long-standing concern and approach issues that affect not only the Museum of Life, but many other science museums in the city of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), according to a survey conducted with professionals from these institutions. This loss of audience is significant in terms of total scheduled visits. Between 2002 and 2011, on average, 3,786 cases of no show were recorded which represents approximately 35% of the total scheduled visits during this period. From these, 1,425 were absences and 2,361 were cancellations. The replacement of these absentees through the scheduling of new groups, it is not that simple since it requires that the group that will not be able to attend to the scheduled visit notifies the museum in advance. According to this study replacement was successful in only 7% of the cases. Understanding the visitor’s problems and the reasons that prevent the visit from happening can help the Museum of Life to adopt strategies to minimize this loss of audience. This survey results indicate that the main issues that cause these absences are of logistical nature, especially those related to transportation of the visiting groups. It was also possible to verify that our visitors are having difficulties in the communication with the Museum. Those results indicate that a review of our processes operating in this area is necessary, particularly in respect to tourism agencies.

Mytella guyanensis Lamarck (1819) and Mytella char- ruana d'Orbigny (1846) are widespread euryhaline bivalves that have become commercially important in Brazil. Despite their importance, how- ever, no genetic information that would be useful to orient governmental policies is available for these species. We analyzed, through allozyme electrophoresis, populations of M. guyanensis and M. charruana along 3,500 km of Brazilian coast.

Mytella guyanensis Lamarck (1819) and Mytella charruana d'Orbigny (1846) are widespread euryhaline bivalves that have become commercially important in Brazil. Despite their importance, however, no genetic information that would be useful to orient governmental policies is available for these species. We analyzed, through allozyme electrophoresis, populations of M. guyanensis and M. charruana along 3,500 km of Brazilian coast. Pairwise comparisons among gene frequencies in M. guyanensis resulted in high levels of pairwise gene identity (I = 0.976 to 0.998). Conversely, significant levels of population structure were found in both M. guyanensis (FST = 0.089) and M. charruana (FST = 0.102). Heterozygosity levels for both species were high (H(e) = 0.090 to 0.134 in M. guyanensis and H(e) = 0.191 to 0.228 in M. charruana). The larger population size of M. charruana could explain, at least partially, the higher levels of genetic variability for this species. These levels of genetic va...
