The main aims are, first, to provide information on the Tunisian context; second, to characterize this new activism marked by a large participation of young women; and, third, to identify whether there are elements typical of a gender division of positions, responsibilities and activism work. The Tunisian case is very interesting because political transitions are crucial moments for women's rights and associations. Based on two surveys, we put forward the hypothesis that inequality between men and women in the allocation of responsibilities will increase or decrease depending on the degree of gender inequality in the possession of skills and resources (educational, linguistic, socio-economic) and previous experiences of associative socialization. After outlining the national context, we find that the p...

It is an important issue both in wellestablished democratic countries and countries on the path towards democracy. It is also the key question of this chapter, which compares how current and future journalists consider how the media relate to power in three countries – Bangladesh, Norway and Tunisia. From their daily practices and contact with those in power, working journalists provide an inside view about the relationship between power and the media. As for the students, their perception is rooted in the journalism education they receive. Since Tunisia is considered to be in the midst of a process of democratization, I have chosen to focus especially on this country. The theories which inform this work are mainly the comparative research efforts of Thomas Hanitzch (2007, 2010), Larbi Chouikha (2014, 2015), and Rahman (2015). The empirical data consists of the survey and the interviews conducted within the framework of the Shared Horizo...

This study seeks to address this lack of scholarship by analyzing the importance of service-learning partnerships between U.S. universities and those in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), particularly in the scope of enhancing democratic communication between the U.S. and the MENA. It focuses on a multi-year, multi-faceted partnership, funded by a major federal grant from the U.S. Department of State, between students and faculty in a U.S.-based communication program and a press institute in North Africa, along with media practitioners, Arab-American news organizations, and civil society leaders and organizations in the U.S. and the MENA. The study includes assessment procedures for partnership outcomes and, perhaps most useful to the readership of this volume, several important considerations for creating and sustaining an international partnership.
